Subject: Spartan's Off-Season Summary

Spartan’s Off-Season Summary.

With this being my first keeper league experience I think I’m still getting my head around value and player worth dependent on age, scoring, position etc. I think I was lucky in being able to draft from the remnants of 2 very strong sides in the mini-draft and even managed to stumble upon some decent players I didn’t necessarily even rate that highly at the time at the back end of the draft.

Trade Period:

In: Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, Jye Caldwell, Jake Lever, Lachie Weller, Brodie Smith, picks 5, 8, 11, 14, 25
Out: Dylan Stephens, Neil Erasmus, Charlie Ballard, Jacob Hopper, Jarrod Berry, Brandon Parfitt, Oscra McInerney, Toby Mclean, Flynn Perez, Sam De Koning

The trade period was interesting in that it’s something I haven’t done before – looking at offers and trying to make the best deals possible. After having a decent crop of KPDs from the mini-draft and bringing in Lever I was able to move on Ballard and SDK to move into the first round.
Moving on some young promising mids in Stephens and Erasmus also allowed me to move into the first round and from there try and trade my way up the order. I was happy to get into a top 5 pick from there. I still expect some of these guys like SDK, Hopper, Erasmus, Stephens to really come on but have to give something to get something! Bringing in JUH was particularly important for our long term KPF depth and seeing that he was available we were keen to get a deal done there.

Draft Summary:

5 – Harry Sheezel – We had the top 5 all fairly even so didn’t mind which one fell to us too much. We expected Wardlaw might slide due to injury, were hoping for Tsatas (as a Bombers supporter) but we were happy with Sheezel as a player who has already scored 3 double tonnes at junior level and can play a number of different roles. We had him at number 3 on our own rankings. Seems to have already locked himself into North’s best 22 and might start slowly if playing in a forward pocket but we expect him to play numerous roles including wing and possibly as a rebounding defender in his first year before transitioning to a more mid/forward role.

8- Bailey Humphrey – We had pencilled in Cam Mackenzie at this spot expecting that Humphrey and Clark would go at 6 & 7 but were happy to have him slide to pick 8 after the Bruins pulled a bit of a surprise going earlier than expected on Busslinger. Humphrey excels at winning contested ball either in the midfield or up forward as a powerful big-bodied unit. Another we expect to play a mid/forward role in the future who can also accumulate plenty of the football. Had him at number 6 on our board.

11 – Reuben Ginbey – After the Humphrey pick we figured we were getting one of Mackenzie, Phillipou or Ginbey at this pick, probably in that preferential order and that’s the order they went in! Happy with any for pick 11 though and Ginbey has impressed well over the pre-season and we hope he continues to build on that, he appears to have cemented a spot in the WCE’s best 22 already. Ginbey also gives us a bit of flexibility as a DPP playing more in the defensive half compared with Sheezel and Humphrey so that was perfect. Had him at number 10 on our board.

14 – Matthew Jefferson – We weren’t particularly targeting a KPF in this draft and had thought Jefferson would be snapped up earlier, similar to Busslinger, but once he was still available at 14 he was best available for us. Considered taking a punt on Ed Allan who went at the next pick but comfortable in loading up on another talented KPF. We expect he will take some time to develop before we see him in the Demons’ best 22 so more of a long term prospect. We had him at 14th on our board.

25 – Olli Hotton – Perhaps going a little bit early on him given where he went on draft day but we had him at number 18 on our draft board before the actual draft went down. He improved a lot in the second half of 2022 and we hope he continues to show similar sort of development and think he will be a key part of St Kilda’s best 22 in years to come. Unfortunately has suffered a stress fracture in his back and we don’t expect him to feature much in the AFL in 2023.

Injury update:
Going into the season we unfortunately already have a number of players on the injury list:

-Lachie Weller – Is progressing well post ACL repair though unlikely to be ready for round 1 – we’ll be building up his match fitness and hope to see him in the early rounds
-Josh Gibcus – His hamstring was on the higher end unfortunately and he had to have that surgically mended. His rehab is going well and we expect him back around rounds 3 or 4
-Toby Bedford – Another high end hamstring tendon injury which is unfortunate after a really strong pre-season. Expecting him to be available after round 5.
-Max King – It’s a bit of a week by week prospect for Maxy after his shoulder reco – it happened early in the pre-season though and we’re hopeful to have him back before the midway point of the year.
-Olli Hotton – Suffered the aforementioned stress fracture in his back and we will take a conservative approach to Olli’s recovery before easing him in through the VFL.

Others:
• Cox is back to full fitness following a skateboarding infection to his knee
• Morrison is touch and go for round 1 after missing out on the practice matches
• Macrae is building up fitness still and will come back via the VFL
• Bailey Williams is touch and go for round 1
• Bowes and Cripps were rested from the pre-season hit outs and are ready for round 1
