Subject: I have had David Astbury on the trade table every year..

I have never asked for a future star in return, in fact hardly anybody has ever enquired to find out what I was after. I use him as an example, as he was a good solid KPD with reasonable scoring ability, job security and was only 25-27 years old, but he wasn't 'sexy' enough to garner interest.

I was fortunate enough to come into the league with a 'mini draft', so was able to be strategic and pick up a number of my talls in that draft (Rance, Blicavs, Brown, Hogan, Daniher, Ceglar) but the others I have had to trade or draft in, often way late in the draft with a pick 50+ (Mihocek, Astbury, Kreuger) or in the MSD after they had been passed over completely in the main draft the off-season before (Aliir, Mayo). Gould is the only one I have drafted early with a pick 15-20 last draft, while McEvoy cost me a 1st rounder, Nankervis cost me Tex Walker and a 1st rounder, Lewis Young a 3rd rounder.. Did I pay too much in these trades? It sounds like some would say yes, I don't know..

It is not for me to comment on why some of the poorer teams are not getting better, but it could be lack of trade opportunities as you say, lack of engagement with the trade periods, lack of squad planning due to work and other commitments etc. I don't think it is due to the better teams trying to rip them off in trade talks - I think I have a good trade relationship/history with most other teams, yourself included - at least I hope that is the case.

Personally, if I was a side rebuilding, I would rather take the hit of a '0' than trade in anybody over say 26/27 who won't be there for my next flag challenge, but we all play the game differently. Burra's are a good example of a side who is just coming out of that period, and I think his side will climb quickly because he has been very focused on youth, but also on targeting young rucks and KPP who will improve with the rest of his squad.

In short, if a coach is on the bottom, and needing to rebuilt, you can do a lot worse than follow Ian's example :)
