Jordan, you said this breed started out as one of the healthiest mastiff breeds but now it's going downhill. I disagree and would say that through diligent work by many conscientous breeders, it is heading the RIGHT way, meaning the total opposite of what you are saying.

I know there are breeders out there who doesn't care to health test at all and who breed their dogs before testing anything in them, be it health and/or temperament and I know others who breed their animals far too young before they know how the adult, mature animal is going to be, both in regards to staying healthy past it's youth but also in a mentality aspect as the Boerboel is slow to mature. This practice is making it more difficult to look at a "true" median score and to know if that has improved through the years, also by breeding untested and young animals, it may be too late by the time someone does decide to health test their animals if that animal already have say 20-30 offspring that has inherited their health and/or mental issues.

However speaking of scientific facts backing my theory; PennHip results show that the median score for the Boerboel keeps improving every year and this despite the dubious practice of some breeders. If everybody tested diligently I am sure the curve of getting healthier Boerboels would improve more rapidly.

Btw, I am also wondering why you changed your kennel name?

Christel
