January 8, 2021

Director Simon Chong called him "a wonderfully brilliant and talented man."

Dave Creek, the lead character designer on Bob’s Burgers, died over the weekend in a skydiving accident, a spokesman for the Fox show confirmed. He was 42.

"Today we tragically lost our Lead Character designer and friend, Dave Creek," Simon Chong, a director on the animated Fox series tweeted late Thursday. "A wonderfully brilliant and talented man who I can guarantee designed your favorite character on Bob’s at some point. I’ll miss you, buddy x."

Wendy Molyneux, a writer on the animated series, on Twitter called Creek "an adventurous funny outgoing amazing artist and one of the most incredible, interesting people I ever met" and added: "If you love Bob’s Burgers, you loved Dave Creek." She added: "I often thought that Dave really knew how to live, and I wish he got to live some more. Rest In Peace, buddy."

20th Television, Fox Entertainment and its Bento Box Entertainment animation studio unit, which produces Bob's Burgers, said in a statement: "We are heartbroken at the tragic passing of Dave Creek, an extraordinary artist who had been with Bob’s Burgers from day one. He was not just an incredible talent but a beautiful person as well, and our hearts go out to his family, friends and all his colleagues at the show who loved him and are grieving today."

Creek's credits as a character designer also include Comedy Central's Brickleberry and Apple TV+ series Central Park.

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Creek attended Ventura Community College and Santa Barbara City College before graduating from Cal Arts in 2005. (He recently served as an adjunct professor at the school.) He joined Bento Box in 2010.

Creek spent the past 16 years or so designing miniature treehouses in bonsai trees. It took him 10 years to complete his first one. He showed off his work on Instagram.

Survivors include his parents, Melanie and David; stepmom Lorraine; brother Robert; sisters Stephanie and Aleasha; brother-in-law Brian; and nieces Micaela, Devin and Ave.
