A Tennessee boy who just celebrated a milestone birthday at 13 years old has died after battling a rare form of childhood dementia.

Lucas Hembree of Louisville, Tenn. stole the hearts of those around him, according to a Facebook page, "Prayers for Lucas" posting updates on the young boy. He died early Tuesday morning.

"My heart is broken. On 04-28-20 at 3:30 am the Lord called Lucas Lee Hembree home to his eternal embrace. Lucas unfurled his beautiful new set of wings. He is no longer in any pain and is now able to run, talk, sing, and do all the things he wasn't able to do while here. Please keep our family in your prayers that we will have comfort. We will post information on arrangements as they are made."

Hembree passed away after battling Sanfilippo Syndrome, a neurodegenerative genetic disease.

Back in February, Hembree asked for birthday cards while he was in hospice care getting ready to celebrate a milestone birthday. He turned 13 years old on March 2, Doctors told his family he wasn't expected to live past 10.
