Actor and singer George Gerdes, who appeared in high-profile projects such as “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “Seinfeld” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” died last week at age 72.
Gerdes experienced a brain aneurysm on Dec. 31 and died the following day, the actor’s life partner confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
He died at a hospital in Glendale, Calif., said the life partner, Judy Johns.
Gerdes, who was born in Queens, broke into the entertainment industry five decades ago and remained an actor throughout his life, with his final TV and film roles both premiering last year.
He released his first folk and pop album, “Obituary,” in 1971, and followed that up with another, “Son of Obituary,” the next year.
In addition to his work on the screen, Gerdes was an accomplished stage actor who appeared on Broadway’s “A Few Good Men,” written by Aaron Sorkin, during the 1980s, according to THR.
His acting career also ramped up during the ‘80s and ‘90s, with gigs on popular shows such as “Miami Vice,” “Seinfeld,” “NYPD Blue” and “Walker, Texas Ranger.”
Gerdes’ movie credits included portraying Major Whitside in 2004′s “Hidalgo” and a detective in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” which came out in 2011.
In 2020, Gerdes appeared on episodes of Grey’s Anatomy” and “Perry Mason,” as well as in the movie “The 11th Green,” which saw him play Dwight Eisenhower.
His death was mourned by others in the acting realm.

“My dear old friend George Gerdes passed away last night,” Michael McKean tweeted. “He was a wonderful songwriter, poet, and actor, much beloved by everyone who knew him. You would have liked him, too. RIP, GG, from the old red lobster.”
Titus Welliver, who worked with Gerdes on the Amazon series “Bosch,” also paid tribute.
“George Gerdes has departed,” Welliver tweeted. “An actors actor and deeply kind man. Rest easy brother, we are fewer...”
