Date Posted: 12:48:18 11/04/09 Wed Here are a few helpful links to other sites: http://www.fspag.org/ a group of physicians trying to "fight the powah" in a real and meaningful way. Lots of good info, especially on the oregon state site even if you aren't in Oregon... http://www.orpag.org the oregon subsite http://web.mac.com/staffofasclepius group of MDs trying to combat specialty boards from rescinding certifications of people who are in recovery, thus nullifying their ability to practice in their specialty. This is a real big problem. Of course, no one cares when you are in "prison", right www.idaa.org Alcoholics anonymous international version. The message board is where it's at. Just make sure to post in harmony with AA, or the moderator there will boot you quickly and erase your posts... lol.. i know. So if you must read it and can't support AA, lurk and be quiet. www.smartrecovery.org SMART recovery, using a "non-disease" approach... Light, yet refreshing. The Un-cola of recovery. www.peele.net A psychologist and lawyer who opposes the disease theory and addiction in general. He is great. Also, he will advocate your case to the board or whoever for a fee.. And do a damn fine job too I might add. No nonsense approach and straight talkin' guy. Plus his blog is entertaining and controversial, but you can't deny his validity on almost every issue. He has authored many excellent books, I have read them all, I recommend "The diseasing of america" in particular. http://www.voy.com/140037/ Real Nurses in Recovery on Voy.com Sound familiar? That's cuz I created this group based on their model. I have been supported by this fine group of RNs and LPNs and others immensely the last 3 years and they have been gracious enough to let me participate in their group. I can't recommend this group enough. The archives of bullshit encountered by them and the RN board, their families, and their work are freaking amazing. It's humbling, inspiring, and empowering. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ethylglucuronide/messages http://etg.weebly.com/ http://etg.weebly.com/uploads/7/4/7/5/74751/etg.samhsa.advisory.pdf That's actually 3 sites, all about EtG, that metabolite created by the breakdown of alcohol in those who drink, and, oh yea, created spontaneously by some unfortunate individuals who don't drink but are in a drug monitoring program..... One is a Yahoo group (excellent), one is Dr. Skipper's EtG wunderland site, a well meaning man who's good intentions led to the prosecution of many, many, innocent doctors and nurses based on a single positive EtG test, and brought the test to the ol' USA in the first place, championing it, pushing it into state health monitoring programs, ruining many many lives forever and ever, bless his well meaning soul. Read, cry, get informed, forewarned in forearmed they say. Now, if I could just work foreskin in there somewhere.... http://www.samhsa.gov/ The governments official site about substance abuse. In the site you will find their official policy (now, unfortunately for some, not back a few years ago) on EtG, stating that it cannot be used solely as a means to determine the abstinence from alcohol... a flawed test if there ever was one. http://www.fsphp.org/ The State Federation of Physician Health Programs official site. For those who actually have a state physician health program (unlike CA, WY, et al), they belong to this super group which meets annually, and helps form policy for the individual states. A good place to get the poop from. As if poop isn't falling on our heads constantly anyway,, but.. Anyway, if anyone reads this blog, forum etc, here you go. These sites took me a long fucking time to assemble on my own. There just isn't any info anywhere for MDs other than from rehab trickment centers. If you read this, and need this info, take it with my good wishes. You are welcome! [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

| Subject: Welcome to Doctors in Recovery | |

Date Posted: 13:20:14 11/02/09 Mon Welcome to Real Doctors in Recovery. My name is prerelapse. I chose my name, because every time I questioned authority or procedure during my journey of the last many years, I was often considered to be "pre-relapse" in my behavior. This opinion by my case manager and group facilitator led to an escalation in my monitoring several times, concerned counseling with a "surpise meeting" with authority figures, and a discharge from one of my facilitated discussion groups one time. My story in short, without disclosing too many specific details, since I am still in the program, follows. A few years ago, I was having a lot of stress at work. After work I drove home and I got in a fight with my wife, drove to a bar, got drunk, drove home and was pulled over by a policeman, and booked for DUI. I checked myself into a rehab facility, notified the board, and here I am today, looking at hopefully a short slide to the finish. It's been quite a ride. I am still married, still have my same job, and they are both going very well. I am in good standing with my monitoring board. I have never particularly like AA, but I do go to meetings occasionally, and check in on online sites regularly. I have been helped by several good online forums. One here is a nursing forum, Real Recovering Nurses right here on voy. I have been misdiagnosed with several different diseases --- alcohol dependence, bipolar disorder, depression --- all of which have been revealed to be the result of over zealous diagnosticians. My current diagnosis is alcohol abuse. The psychiatrists at the rehab facility I went to stated that I had "tendencies" to bipolar disease, depression, etc. They have subsequently vacated their diagnoses. Several of my board appointed group moderators, the state appointed rehab facility (yes I had to do 2 rehab programs 1 inpatient and 1 oupatient) and 2 other psychiatrists have stated that I don't meet the criteria for alcohol dependence. It has been difficult enduring what I felt to be wrong, and on the state record it still states alcohol dependence. But I feel at this point if I try and dispute that officially I will end up getting sent to another exceedingly conservative rehab facility for an "objective evaluation" (at a facility "approved of" by the state), which will undoubtedly show alcohol dependence, and extreme denial. So I will keep my mouth shut. Honestly it doesn't really matter anymore since I am almost completed. My wife also doesn't feel I am an alcoholic. There is no doubt however, that I got a DUI and endangered others with my reckless behavior, and that I drank in response to frustration, which is an abuse of alcohol. In any case, there is a brief synopsis. Please post your own stories or thoughts. Don't be afraid!! Just stay anonymous and don't post your name, or any other information you don't want to reveal about yourself. It feels good to vent! I'd like to hear your stories..
