Ever read Macbeth? Macbeth was clearly a bad guy, he killed someone in order to usurp their throne. Or was he? Maybe he was a good guy that simply followed the prescience of the witches? Maybe he was a good guy that just got caught up in circumstance? God, just like Macbeth, (and every other piece of literature for the record) can be viewed as a conflicted character of tyrranical or benevolent deeds. It's just a matter of how the viewer wishes to perceive him, and then they go about picking verses that support their perception.

You say he was basically good, and that he wants everyone to turn from their wicked ways. Of course, God had to know long before he made humans that they would be wicked. It would be the equivalent of knowing that if you procreated you'd make Hitler. Would you make Hitler and hope for the best? If you did, and Hitler didn't do what he did, then you really never knew anything about Hitler to begin with.

Basically good, basically bad, it's irrelevant if none of it is real to begin with. If Macbeth was good or bad no one cares besides a few literary critics in Harvard. Similarly, it's of little consequence if that very first premise of God existing is false, and just like Macbeth, people can pick and mix quotes, actions and plot to support whatever view they wish to promote.
