If you really want to prevent abortions, instead of trying to outlaw them, you should encourage more sex education.
If more young women and girls were aware of birth control methods and the use of condoms, and these were readily available, they would have fewer zygotes to abort.
If you vehemently oppose having an abortion, you do have one good option: don't have an abortion. Don't have unprotected sex which could cause yourself or someone else to become pregnant.
If women were more aware of their options, and had options more readily available to them, indeed, they might go ahead and have sex younger than their parents or the Christian right might hope. But they would end up with fewer abortions and unwanted pregnancies which become either children raised by teenagers or children dumped off in foster homes to have crappy lives.
Maybe if certain groups were not so hush hush about condoms and birth control pills, this would be less of a problem. Christian groups try to ban places like Planned Parenthood which offers, guess what? STI tests, birth control prescriptions, condom information.
It seems some people think that women are just purposefully going out and impregnating themselves so they can go through the emotional and physical turmoil of abortion. This is not the case.
People ''want'' abortions as much as they want a broken leg or brain surgery or maybe a car accident.
Abortion is sometimes the best and most moral choice, and I reiterate that an even better choice would be to offer more sexual education to young people and those underpriviledged.
Sex is not a frightening thing, which some of our parents like to tell us it is, but a teenager having to choose between abortion and endangering her health and life to have a baby she is ill-prepared to have is very frightening.
It is easy to recline on the moral highground and say that abortion is wrong or sinful, or shouldn't be used as birth control or to correct an accident or mistake, but it is very different when you're a woman and you hold the key to life in your uterus, and everyone else thinks they have a spare key to come in your uterus and tell you what to do.
