In reply to: QUITTNER 's message, "There are very many denominations of Christianity" on 05/15/02 6:47pm

I am not particularly into religious discussions, but I do appreciate clear and defensible points being made. Unfortunately, such is not the case here.

>… I try to go way back
>to the ORIGINAL idea about Christianity by Jesus the
>Jew for deserving Jews.

In your going back to the "ORIGINAL idea" do you have access to any ancient biblical manuscripts that the rest of us are denied access to? Or is there some reason to think that your concept of the ORIGINAL idea is a better one than ones put forth by others who differ with you?

>… If it is true that God inspired the
>authors, then it is also true that God has ever since
>inspired/communicated with people, and these more
>recent communications must not be ignored.

The phrasing you use is of the form of a condition that necessarily leads to a conclusion. "If … then …". But is it a valid statement? Assume the truth of your condition that God inspired the authors of the bible. Why does it then have to follow that He has ever since inspired / communicated with people? Is it possible that (as some religions hold) the message delivered in the Bible was sufficient and complete?

What do you mean when you say "these more recent communications must not be ignored"? What more recent communications? The ones that came through the Branch Davidians, or Jonestown? How about the recent scriptures claimed by the Mormons?

I would be amenable to a restatement which I think still is in line with what you really meant, to wit: "If it is true that God inspired the authors, then it is reasonable to think He might have continued such communication with man to the present." But to state it as an absolute logical conclusion means you can prove it.
