Perhaps he's saying because it's an odd number and not an even one? I guess it would be somewhat interesting to study how things evolve into odd numbers, since symmetry seems to be such a part of nature.

Not knowing the evolutionary history of pears, I'd guess that somewhere along the line, a mutation occurred, and didn't necessarily benefit the pear, but didn't hurt it either, and over time, the one with five naturally became more dominant somehow, maybe not due to any real "reason" other than being in the right places at the right time so as to be able to reproduce.

But that's just an educated guess.
