You're right, of course. It has been proven time and time again that if you have already decided what you are looking at before you actually look at it, you will see the things that line up with what you want to believe and discount the things that don't. People do the same thing with psychics and other spiritually-based activities. If a psychic tells you one thing that's right, you will remember that and forget the 100 things he said that really weren't right. Sadly, it's a human tendency to notice the things that support our beliefs and conveniently not notice the things that don't.

Your post makes perfect sense to me. Prophecy is just another way people use to reinforce what they already want to believe. The fact that someone who doesn't share their beliefs doesn't see anything special about the prophecy doesn't faze them... they just write it off to our being "blinded to the truth." :)
