As opposed to life imprisonment where you just let them rot away in their cells? Either way, it's a death sentence.

It depends on what you mean by "mess things up". Athens had a true democracy, and they prospered for quite a while.

Why in the world is prison better for society as a whole? Keeping people in a concrete building where they rape each other daily and still have the opportunity to escape and inflict more harm on people is better for society as a whole?

It protects the mechanisms that keep whatever society it is working, be it communism, or be it capitalism. Make no mistake, it isn't done for the benefit of the people, it's done so that the people will not fall out of the societal hierarchy. If everyone started killing people when they got mad, there would be a shortage of workers and a total decay of control in that society.

If you want to see how much your society cares about you, wait until war time. They'll be more than happy to make you expendable.
