In reply to: cyclops 's message, "Yes Bob and George are equal" on 05/ 8/03 12:28am

>I tend to look at the bigger picture. In regards to
>earning money Bob (in your example) does not earn any.
>George Bush, on the other hand, does earn money. So
>thus, financially, Bob and George are not equated.
>
>However, both play an active role in society itself,
>just on opposite sides. Bob stimulates the economy by
>being helpless. How, without people like him there
>would be thousands, if not millions of people
>unemployed. Doctors, nurses, specialists, manufacuters
>(someone had to make Bob's bed), attendants, hospital
>security etc. Understand that from a financial
>perspective Bob does indeed contribute in his own way
>whether he knows it or not.

This doesn't make any sense to me. I just wanted to let you know. Take your thinking to its logical conclusion, and you have a whole society brimming with millions of jobs because of the millions of people who can't do anything for themselves. At some point, an economy is not going to be able to support this.

By your same logic, we should encourage criminal activity, since that also creates many jobs which would be lost if people stopped committing crimes. We should also encourage litter, since people have to be paid to clean it up.

Just because something creates jobs does not mean an economy wouldn't be better without it. If your mentally ill person can be said to be "contributing" to society by creating jobs, then the criminals must be praised for their contribution to society as well. Are you prepared to say that criminals make a useful contribution to society?
