Actually, Darwin never really expected the fossil record to support his theory in the sense of being a complete record of the biological past of the planet.
Nonetheless, his original thesis has a section called something like "geological gaps in the fossil record" and he goes on to explain that things like the number of the species that existed and the conditions necessary for fossilation would be in part, determining characteristics of what info would appear in the fossil record.
He also mentions that environmental changes are what makes a species change.
So though Darwin doesn't say explicitly that the gaps in the fossil record could be explained by rapid evolution, when we take his other statements in his theory, and combine them, we get a more specified PE explanation that was generally evident throughout the pages of Darwin's book. Same story, more refined explanation.
