Subject: RADIO DAYS

Just as I was ahving my morning oatmeal this morning I was looking at the tound Quaker oatmeal container and remembering how, when I was about 7 years old my grandfather showed me how to build a crystal radio. He showed me how the wind the enamel coated wire around the oatmeal container to make the coil and then use a piece of quartz crystal and a wire called a cats whisker to find the hot spot on the crystal.
I was totally amazed when after we connected one wire to the pipe going to the radiator in the house and another wire hanging out a window as an antenna that it worked without any kind of power. He also showed me that by laying the headphone on a china dish it would amplify the sound like a loudspeaker. The only drawback was that being in NYC the only station we could get was WQXR because it had such a strong signal. That staion was owned by the New York Times and only played classical music.
