Subject: Maspeth H. S. May Start On Metropolitan Ave.

The Department of Education (DOE) has announced plans to incubate the ninth-grade class of an under-construction Maspeth high school at the Metropolitan Avenue schools complex in Forest Hills.

Under the proposal, the DOE would “co-locate” the first class of the Maspeth school being built on the former site of a Restaurant Depot at 54-40 74th St. that will offer priority to residents of School District 24. It is on track to be completed by September 2012, in time for the 2012-2013 school year.

The school would share space at the Forest Hills campus, located at 91-30 Metropolitan Ave., with Queens Metropolitan High School, and the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School, and an existing District 75 school.

Queens Metropolitan and Metropolitan Expeditionary are both new schools currently in their first year of operation; the former is a zoned high school, while the Metropolitan Expeditionary School is currently a School District 28 choice middle/high school.

A “co-location” means that two or more school organizations are located in the same building and may share common spaces like auditoriums, gymnasiums, and cafeterias.

In September 2012, the Maspeth school would be re-located to its longterm site. If the building is not ready, any proposal to extend the co- location or move the school into a new building would result in a new hearing.

The Educational Impact Statement (EIS) on the proposal can be found on the DOE website at http://schools.nyc.gov/AboutUs/leadership/ PEP/ publicnotice/ 2010- 2011/Mar12011Proposals. A copy of the EIS is also available in the main offices of Queens Metropolitan High School and the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School.

Written comments can be sent to HS.Proposals@schools.nyc.gov., and oral comments can be left at 1-212-374-7621.

A public hearing on the proposal will be held on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. at Queens Metropolitan High School.
