Sounds lovely, Bystander!

It really is easiest for Ballet instructors to do this when there are only one or two boys in the class.

You do mention his classes have been girls-ballet in content so far; this is because he is the only male this year there. So, it's pretty normal. I suppose until now he has just worn black tights and a t-shirt? I have to agree it really is time he joins the class in the proper ballet-togs. Until now, he's been a bit of a distraction; the teachers need to see exact body-placement, which is why students wear tights and leotards, and when all students are wearing the same colors, it makes uniformity of motion that much easier to detect.

Do the girls wear white tights, with ballet-pink (very soft) color long-sleeve leotards? If so, this is what the 12 year old boy next door will/should be wearing this year. The white tights can be either the ballet style (cotton/lycra, thick, best for winter) or once summer arrives, white, very sheer pantyhose. He may be ready for these by summer. White can be bought in any clothing store, but if they wear a soft pink color tights, you may need to buy Danskin brand at a ballet store.

The mother is right; it should mean panties too... but make sure she knows to buy him the narrow-backed thong style of panties. Ballet tights will show 'panty lines' with anything else. They take a bit of getting used to, but most boys enjoy them.

Do keep in mind that one year of ballet is usually enough for football, karate, or soccer-boys to get the extra ballance and grace they need on the field, but... in my experience, at least... it seems that boys who stay with Ballet for a 2nd year and beyond usually quit the sport they were playing in order to devote themselves to dance.

Do keep us updated on your neighbour!
