Michael walked across the grass, knowing that Nikita knew the moment that he had slipped out of the house. Her head had moved up slightly from the bowed position. Something that if she didn’t know that it was him that she wouldn’t have done. She rubbed her elbows as she didn’t turn to look at him as she sat on the middle round bench, looking towards the back of the property. “How are you feeling, Kita?”
Nikita turned her head to look at Michael and he was pleased to see that she hadn’t spent all of this time out here crying. But she was clearly disappointed with what had happened. She had wanted to come home to a happy house. He was sure that she was also very disappointed that with all that had happened no one, not Walter, Adam, Lisa, or Sabina had noticed the ring that she now wore. She was disappointed that all the other adults had already departed so they wouldn’t see the ring either.
Michael knew that it disappointed him that he couldn’t get to see the joy of the ring being discovered on Nikita’s finger today either.
“Mostly?” Nikita asked and Michael nodded his head as he slipped beside her on the bench and dipped his head across his body to lean closer to her. “Most of all… I’m sore.”
Michael raised an eyebrow and Nikita half chuckled-half groaned as she took Michael’s hand. “I wouldn’t change a thing about being sore, Michael. That’s why I’m not worried about being tired either.”
“But you are probably sorer because of what happened…” Michael whispered and Nikita bopped her head up and down. “Can you believe Walter thought that what he was doing was good?”
“I feel like I’m still not getting the whole story about what went on last night,” Michael spoke as he took Nikita’s hand and kissed her fingers. “And Walter is getting older…”
“That isn’t an excuse, Michael,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “But it’s done… but it also means… we’ll probably have to take Sabina with us when we go to contact Reagan.”
“Can we talk about that in a moment?” Michael inquired as he shifted to face Nikita a bit more. She looked at him and he could see her eyes were tired. She wanted to show her ring off and then Nikita wanted a nap. Michael wondered if he could make everyone take a nap this afternoon. “I talked to Sabina.”
“Was she upset with me stopping her?” Nikita’s voice cracked and Michael shook his head from side to side. “I know that you had a sense of what was going on… that she was pretending to be always happy… and I know that you were sure that it would pass in time…”
“It would,” Nikita declared and Michael sighed. “But she is very intelligent, Kita. So I talked to Sabina about being herself… that she doesn’t have to pretend to be anything that she isn’t.”
“Michael…” Nikita groaned as she closed her eyes. Michael pushed the hair out of Nikita’s face and kissed her lips gently to bring her eyes back to look at him. “I know that you have mixed feelings on this, Kita. You wanted to find out that your daughter is always happy… but she has parts of both of us… and I think there is more reserve nature in her than she has allowed us to see.”
“I don’t want to see her unhappy…”
“This isn’t about being unhappy,” Michael clarified. “While Sabina might be very intelligent with knowledge… her social skills… they aren’t. She equates happiness to be all smiles and laugh and energy. It’s better to handle this now… although I don’t think she would have continued much longer.”
With a wince, Nikita shifted her body and leaned it against Michael’s body. She looked at him with a wary eye. “Why aren’t you sore?”
Michael hid a smile and kissed Nikita’s fingers again. “I didn’t grab a running girl in the hallway and carry her downstairs. Because, I am sore too, Kita. But it’s good.”
Nikita rolled her shoulders back as she tilted her head down towards her shoulder. “Is that all I need to know about this conversation?”
Michael thought about the teenaged book that Sabina was reading, but knew that in the grand schema, it wasn’t worth worrying Nikita about it right now. Both of them were happy that Sabina was still more interested in actual books than the computer in her room. Yet, there was another topic that had to be discussed. “Well, Sabina told me that she saw Adam kissing Lisa last night on the porch.”
There was no way to stop Nikita’s body from moving as quickly as she jumped from that resting position to practically being on her feet. Michael held onto her hands and clutched at her wrists to force her to sit back down. He could see her mind running back into that house to yell at Adam. “That’s what Sabina thought she saw.”
“Where was everyone last night?” Nikita inquired and Michael knew that now was absolutely not the time to bring up that Sabina was ruining the poker game because she was counting cards. “The point is, Kita… Adam hasn’t found the cameras yet on the porch.”
Nikita exhaled as some of the anxiety of this news left. “So he didn’t kiss her.”
“Not on the lips,” Michael corrected. Nikita blinked her eyes as she studied his face. “Cheek?”
Michael shook his head from side to side. “Forehead.”
Nikita sucked in air as she absolutely had an opinion on that. For some reason, the cheek felt a lot more innocent. The forehead, that brought a chill to her body. She knew how it felt when Michael kissed her there. It meant a lot. It was a sign of something a lot more and Nikita didn’t like it that these two teenagers were showing affection like that. “What are we going to do?”
“We aren’t going to tell Adam about the cameras, that’s for sure,” Michael huffed as he shook his head. Nikita laughed. “I knew that.”
Michael thought about it for a while and swallowed. “I think you should talk to Adam about it… about how Sabina told us about it… and you can handle Adam while I plan on how to approach Reagan.”
“You approach Reagan?”
“You were the last person she saw in Section, Kita. She could run without you even getting a word out.”
“But she knows you too!” Nikita protested and Michael paused. He waited for Nikita to take a deep breath and roll her shoulders back again with the tension not helping her sore muscles. Maybe she needed a bath before that nap.
“I didn’t have much to do with her. I think I only spoke to her one or two times. Was she one of those operatives who… liked to… keep tabs…”
“She wasn’t one of your fan club members,” Nikita rolled her eyes as she thought about all the female operatives that could have been known as stalkers of Michael. “But she knew you were out.”
Michael was stunned and he blinked his eyes while sputter. “How?”
“Michael, I would say about half of the people who I got out of Section had some realization that I had gotten you free to… about of that half… about a quarter eventually asked me…. And four asked me right away,” Nikita informed him as she sat up and then slumped, clearly becoming uncomfortable outside.
“Four?”
“Walter, Davenport and Jason,” Nikita spoke and Michael nodded his head. He kind of figured them. “And Reagan.”
“Why Reagan? How?” Michael asked and Nikita smirked. “I told her that I was getting her out and she immediately asked if she was supposed to send you back to get me out if she came across you.”
Michael found this all interesting. He didn’t think that Reagan really realized what was going on between them. She might become very upset when she found out that Nikita had a baby that she had smuggled out of Section One. This could make it hard to get Reagan to be Sabina’s teacher.
“I told her that she wasn’t to tell you to come find me, that she was to let you have your life,” Nikita continued and Michael looked out to the sky and then back to Nikita. “She didn’t let it go, did she?”
Nikita laughed. “She said that once I got her out, she was free from my rules. And if I was brave enough to get her out, Walter and Jason out… and the kids out… then she would be brave enough to tell you the truth.”
Michael leaned back on his palms as he thought about this for some time. “Well… it’s good that we have to take Sabina with us… might help with the approach. But we should take Adam too.”
“Really?” Nikita asked and Michael nodded his head. “But first… you are going to soak in the tub… after we kick Walter out… and we are going to rest all day long…”
“I won’t protest,” Nikita responded as she touched Michael’s arm. “Tomorrow we go try to meet with Reagan? I mean… I won’t force her to come with us… if she has roots.”
Michael shook his head. “Jason and Davenport have been working on that… that’s why Davenport isn’t here… he went to scout ahead… neither is finding anything.”
“It’s been a day,” Nikita pointed out and Michael nodded his head. “But if there were roots… they’d show pretty quickly.”
“But you don’t want us to go tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow, we need to do something with the kids. School is going to be starting and we need to be a family,” Michael explained. Nikita liked the sound of it. She could agree to it. When was the last time they did something just the four of them?
“We’ll need Adam to approach Reagan.”
“You are going to ask him to talk to her?” Nikita frowned as she was confused. “That’s not going to work.”
“No,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “But if we can get a chance to talk to Reagan… Adam can take care of Sabina… It might be wise to keep Davenport in the shadows.”
Nikita frowned. Why did Davenport need to be kept out of this? Nikita saw no reason why Davenport couldn’t just take care of Sabina. She didn’t like using Adam for this. She had learned her lesson the last time she tried to plot using Adam for something.
“Davenport dated Reagan for a while… I thinks he was too young for him… but why get mixed into those emotions right away,” Michael pointed out and Nikita blinked her eyes. “I…. I didn’t know that.”
“Well, now you do,” Michael stood up and stretched his arms out before extending them to help Nikita to stand up. “So… I take care of Reagan…. And you can talk about this kiss thing with Adam…”
“After a bath and a nap.”
“If we are lucky enough to get those,” Michael leaned over and kissed Nikita’s forehead. She pulled away with a groan. “You are just reminding me how much I don’t want to have this conversation with Adam.”
