Subject: Most impressive fb win since 2003

Melville impresses me more every time I see him. Was it common knowledge that he has the lowest interception rate in all of Div 1? No picks last 200 passes? 1 pick in last 350?? Interesting that Hunt did not platoon the RBs as much but gave the bulk of the carries to Holland, especially in key situations. Should I have known who Thomas Ives is? Nice balanced offense - same run and pass yds. Great defense against the run. Raiders dominated that game until the last 10 minutes. Not sure if late UNH rally was due to any faults on our part but rather a good team desperately trying to get back in the game. No quibble with Hunt running out the clock at the end of the end against a team that can strike so quickly. I do have to question that pitch out with 4 minutes left on a wet field. UHN had only lost 5 times at home in 9 years coming into that game! The announcers didn't seem to have good eyesight. A completed pass was dropped and vice versa. a sideline pass was intended for the endzone, as so forth.

Who would have thought this 2 months ago? Undefeated in the PL and a playoff win against a school that has been to the semis the last 2 years. While I'm usually pessimistic when we take on OOC non-Ivy foes, I had a good feeling about this one and thought the karma was with us. Very happy for Hunt to finish the year this way (no matter what happens next week(s)), after he started out 5-10.

Looked from the stands like we were trying to bleed the clock & when they went to the hurry-up Goldrich found his rhythm... got a little scary there at the end! Talking to the players afterwards, apparently that pitch is an option every time Melville runs the stretch play, he just hasn't pitched it at all this year... think it was just a mistake by a player trying to do a little too much. Glad we survived it!

We're also not the only school that doesn't market its athletic product very well. Attended the game with a pal who's got a son who's at UNH, they shut their dorms down for Thanksgiving week and didn't re-open them once the game was scheduled at Cowell... he can't get into his room until tonight after dinner. Wonder why there were no students in the stands?

"Who would have thought this 2 months ago? "

That's really the really wonderful aspect of this season. From the onset of schollies, I've wondered how the pieces for a new Era was going to materialize ? After the shellacking by a very good Navy team, red zone impotence in UNH 1 and giving the game away to Yale, you had to be skeptical about whether anything had changed materially and whether gate could pull off a decent season?

Still puzzled by the Princeton loss. But, since then, week-by-week, this team, this Coach/Staff and Gate FB in the new Era, found itself. Obviously, the skill players and the balance of this team on O turned out to be much more consistent in the games subsequent to Princeton than any of us would have imagined. And we scoffed at Hunt's statement at the end of the summer that the D line and LB's were as good as any group he had worked with in his 20 years at Gate. And some of us even wondered, i contrast to Biddle's John Wayne persona, whether Hunt was "too nice of a guy? "

We were dazzled by the O line pulverizing Holy Cross in the 4th quarter.
But none of us knew that the line on both sides of the ball, were this special? Love it: "We're going to run And You're not going to run against us. Want to try ?" Not as sexy as a pass-happy spread offense line or a crazed inconsistent D line....but consistent and tough. The traditional Gate smash mouth football executed quietly, but CONSISTENTLY.

Compared to any team that we've played this year, save Navy, watching our season progress encompassing the growth of players, coaches and the Program, itself, was the most dramatic story. Especially, because to truly appreciate what was developing you had to savor the development, game-by-game. Regardless of the outcome at JMU, this will rank as a memorable season within the 125 years of gate FB.

The next step, is to do this, season by season, from this great foundation.
Go Gate!

Gate'83, my guess is students do not return to campus until today.

Had a great feeling about this game. Everyone touting UNH for winning its last 4, which got them into the tournament: URI? Maine? UAlbany? They have combined records of 7-26. They also lost to 4-7 Delaware (sorry we couldn't put them away this year and exact some revenge). UNH did beat #11 Richmond...and we beat (at the time) #11 Fordham. Despite UNH winning the H2H, still thought we should have hosted. Going through your conference undefeated should have been rewarded, and UNH did not play #15 Navy.

Also had a great feeling b/c this season we were picked to finish 3rd and proved people wrong. An underdog always has a secret advantage.

Impressed by many things:

Melville's growth is tremendous. He was very young and green not long ago and I was skeptical. McCarney left big shoes to fill.

Diversity: Maddaluna, Quazza, Ives, Greenwalt on offense; THREE running backs (this has to be the most impressive, ingenious, effective idea ever), an improving defense with Afriyie, Diener, Field, Castillo, Campbell...and wait until next season with Steffan and Buttermore likely returning, wow. Many freshman names that haven't had a chance to make an impact yet, but our future roster/size looks impressive!

JMU (9-2) will be a daunting task with these stats:
Madison leads the nation in three categories, including total offense (549.7), first downs (313) and third-down conversions (55.3%) while also ranking second in scoring offense (44.8). It also ranks fifth in completion percentage (66.6%), sixth in rushing offense (284.4) and seventh in red-zone offense (90.3%).

However, they have losses to #11 Richmond and #16 W&M. We share a common opponent in Lehigh, which they manhandled 55-17 in week 2. If we stick to our plan with nothing fancy, we could give them a run for their money. Bridgeforth Stadium (cap. 24,877) will be full with home supporters.

Ives had been in some games during the regular season and went pretty much unnoticed except for the coaching staff. At 6'4" it looks like he will be a good addition to the WR position. Also have to keep an eye on corner back Tyler Castillo who played at the top high school level in FL. He had offers from FBS schools. Both are freshman which indicates scholarships have made a difference. I thought the broadcast by ESPN3 was pretty good even with the couple of missed plays. Announced attendance was 3,300. I suspect if the game was in Hamilton, Kerr could have matched that amount. Go 'gate, beat JMU.
