The negative was a half-growl, vocal nuances barely distinguishable among the rumbles of a bestial noise. Had the white ears, she would have flattened them. Without feeling more than a dull ache and weary stress in her thick muscles, she stood and paced over to the river bank, unable to make her path a straight line. If it hadn't required too much stretching of thick scar tissue, Jiciri would have curled her lip in a mute snarl. But, instead, she dropped her muzzle and drank deeply from the cold, clean water.

When she raised her head, water streaming from her rag-furred snout, her forest-green eyes held a light of resignation in their blackened depths. "We could be walking into a death-trap if we tried to follow them." She paused, hating the fact that her voice was probably too loud and unable to fix it. "What did the pack second say before he left?"
