I love the D-Motor concept - slow revving, direct drive, 4 stroke, side valve engine with more power and a flat power band. It would be a brilliant replacement for my Rotax 582 were it not for a few tricky problems:

1 D-Motor do not offer and have no intention of offering a bed mounted option, despite being told of the potential market as a Rotax 582 replacement. The engine just has a standard Jabiru type rear mount. No doubt some form of adaptor could be made but that would add weight and complexity - and need to be LAA approved. If enough Rotax 582 owners complain to D-Motor about the lack of a bed mount option perhaps they will re-visit this matter.

2 I did ask LAA (Francis Donaldson) for his view on the LAA approving a D-Motor in my Pulsar but he was particularly unenthusiastic - Pulsar tricky to land in the event of an engine failure; new engine designs more prone to failure in early years. OK that’s not an insurmountable problem but the approval process could result in the first UK Pulsar that is converted to a D-Motor being grounded for months whilst LAA shuffle the paperwork.

3 the underside of the engine has to be accessible (or the engine removed) to check/adjust the tappets (being a side valve engine, the adjusters are underneath – no rockers or rocker covers). On the plus side the side valve operation simplifies the engine, the lack of rockers reduces the engine dimensions, and if a valve is “dropped” it won’t mangle the engine.

4 Although the engine is really light it will probably need a fairly beefy battery to drive the injection system and the electronic ignition for a reasonable time in the event of the alternator/regulator failing in flight. This might be offset by LAA allowing some weight increase.

FWIW early prototype D-Motors had a simple carb. They were down on power (75hp I think) but would have still been much better than the Rotax 582.
