Subject: Fred Phelps, another side

I'm responding to this article on Fred Phelps..
http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/article/20140323/OPINION/140328497/11608/OPINION

There are always two sides of a story and the article about Fred Phelps is no different.
He might go down as being one of the most hated man in American history I tought you would like to know the other side of Fred Phelps that is hardly ever mention by the media.
Before Fred got the notoriety of being a fighter against homosexuality he was well known for his defending the blacks in discrimination lawsuits.
In the 1950s and 1960s at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, his advocacy for anti-discrimination cases as a defense lawyer earned him awards from civil rights groups and retribution from anti-civil rights forces.
To win discrimination cases, though, blacks needed a lawyer to represent them. Phelps was the only lawyer in Topeka, white or black, willing to take those cases. As a lawyer representing blacks he gained a reputation as a sharp, competent civil rights attorney whose eloquent and fiery orations mesmerized juries."
He was so good at what he did he was honored three times for his civil rights work. In 1986 he received the Omaha Mayor's Special Recognition Award and an award from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Blacks in Government. In 1987 he received an award from a branch of the NAACP for his "steely determination for justice during his tenure as a civil rights attorney."

In retribution for his work, Phelps was threatened and shots were fired at his windows". How many lawyers today would stand for that Why wasn't this aspect of Freds life mentioned in your your article?
Whatever his life became after that seems to be the thing he is remembered doing, I guess the good he did didn't matter.
You might find Fred Phelps as a detestable person for his stand against gays and other biblical issues he definitely was right defending the defenseless. He also did a lot for freedom of speech it's because of guys like him we can say what we want today on all sorts of controversial issues.
When it comes to Fred Phelps even a broken clock is right two times a day.
