Who wrote this? It's a great point. I love the "handful of friends" idea. Why would you ever need more than a few good friends? I myself was never an attention seeking person in high school. The people who worked really hard to gain attention were the ones who pissed me off. Making scenes in the cafateria or other very public places was not a cool thing to do.
I think as long as the people you care about respect you, why should you invest any effort in trying to impress people you don't know? Just to inflate your own ego? I'm glad to say that none of my best friends needed that kind of ego boost.
