Mahiri smiled at Kovu, pushing the feather at her jawline back so that the string stayed behind her ear. It fluttered in the soft breeze and tickled her neck. The young woman reached up and itched the spot at her neck, and nodded as Kovu repeated the colors back to her. His brows furrowed in confusion and Mahiri broke in to that snaggle toothed, sincere smile, as if apologizing for not being able to explain it any better. The inner workings of dragonkind were unknown to her, a traveling brat confined to a wagon or tent outside a gather. She hardly knew if weyrbrats and dragonriders could fully explain the methods of dragons. Her grass green eyes searched across the sands, watching the unmoving eggs.

It had been a long while. Nothing had happened for quite a bit and Candidates were growing fatigued. The hum was ever present, but general banter died down to nearly nothing. Mahiri looked up in the stands at the people who sat, most fanning themselves or napping, eyes closed to block the offending sun with all its brightness. Mahiri clasped her hands to her forehead and pulled them down her face, closing her eyes and sighing in relief at the slight respite came from the darkness behind her hands. She dropped them to her sides and looked to Kovu as he asked the same question she had asked so many years before. Mahiri grinned and answered.

"Long ago I wanted a pink dragon, but yes, that's all as you put it. Their colors are still unique from dragon to dragon, even with few. Some blues are near white, others are dark as a clear midnight sky. The same with greens. Grass green, forest green, deep, dark, grey tinted green. All kinds really. I think bronzes and golds have the most constancy when it comes to a specific shade."

She smiled, hoping she could be of more help as his look turned thoughtful once more. The conversation was very nice, and Mahiri was enjoying the time spent talking as it made the day go by a little bit faster. After all, now was a good time to stop and make friends with those that you would most likely be spending alot of time with from here on. It's not like Mahiri had anything better to do besides stand and be bored while staring at unmoving shells stuck in the sand. She scuffed at a shard by her feet, looking up at Shrineth and absently biting her tongue as Kovu's next question was posed. She sighed and talked as she observed everything around, turning andmaking eye contact with him every so often, but wanting to take in everything as it happened, so she would not miss a hatching.

"I'm not sure why it is or how it came to be, but no. Dragon hatchlings Impress at birth. If there is no suitable candidate, the hatchling will die. There's no way I can explain alot of things dragons do, I don't know. They just...know who they want to Impress. It's an awe striking thing."

She smiled half heartedly and shrugged. She could explain some things, but why dragonets impressed who they did was all but lost on her. They picked on personality, soul, something. Something unseen and difficult to judge in human terms. Which was why dragons did it. With a sigh Mahiri looked around again, and went back to worrying at the shard by her sandal, nosing it through the grainy landscape...
