The addiction is very real. Nicotine rewires the brain and then the brain believes nicotine is about as important as water or food and will generate cravings until it gets its fix. The difference being you will die without water or food but not without nicotine. If you Google you can find images of the brain and how nicotine rewires things. If somebody stops smoking and says has a cigarette a year later that one cigarette will totally rewire the brain again. Truth be told the only thing a cigarettes does is eliminate a craving and set you up for another cigarette.

Nobody really knows the root of the smoking fetish but one popular theory is it goes back to movies. Woman smoked to appear more sexy, after sex, etc. Assuming this is all true then the fetish goes away someday as now days smoking is rarely portrayed that way

Longevity is in intersteng question I think. For the most part smokers that do have heath issues have them after many years of smoking. But is is the cumulative after or is smoking much worse for the body when we are older. Virtually nobody starts when they are older so I doubt anybody can study that. It could be around body repairs itself quickly and the older body does not
