I've had a feeling 'Slim' changes identities depending on where he posts.

If my memory is correct, when he started writing fiction, he posted as 'VSlimmer', that changed to 'SlimV'. Of course it could be two different people with similar internet handles.

I kind of do the same thing, I'm either AusNick or SBD Editor, but I always make it clear I'm the same person, I typically sign off messages and emails as Nick.

Decades ago, back when ICQ had a Mac client, I used the username AusNick, one guy thought I was German. Aus meaning From or Out of.

When I used to post on Smoke Signals Messageboard 1, I originally posted as Nick. Until another Nick popped up, who everyone thought was me, so I became AusNick to avoid confusion. Heh, used to throw a lot of strine into my forum posts, got a chuckle out of people not knowing what the hell I was talking about.

I've never misrepresented myself, not worth the effort. I don't understand why some people use multiple identities, nobody knows who they really are anyway.

When I chose to use the name AusNick, I did a few internet searches, to see if anyone else was using the name, didn't find anything. I've noticed over the years there have been a couple of other people posting as AusNick in various places, I like to think I'm the original.

Back years and years ago when the community was more cohesive, and some forums displayed IP addresses, it was not difficult to do lookups, helped Out a few people as trolls, which was a bit of a problem back then. I could do it here, but I value my privacy, and that of others, so I don't bother. And since a lot of people use VPNs these days, it's a mugs game to even try. I remember there was one guy who was being a pest on the original Smoking Ladies Board, when it was on Boardhost, and was moderated by Michael C., I looked up his IP, and it was some financial institution in the US, the guy was also posting using the same username on an online gambling site, and there were timecodes, so I did the math and it turned out he was gambling at work. And since he'd dropped his email with me at some point, I sent him a quiet message to cut it out, or I'd email his employer. He vanished like a fart on the wind.

I used to keep a Troll and Pest register, helped out a few mods back in the day, I doubt anyone would remember though. I just searched, I've still got 'em. Circa 2011. Nostalgia.

Nick
