Written Of Smoke 2: Single Mothers (Daniel Gary Leon) - A Review

Warning: This Review Contains Spoilers

Part One: The Author

The author was active on Amazon between 2015 and 2018 and released four anthologies in the 'Written of Smoke' series during that time. Unlike Linzi Dixon or Kaitlyn Bringhurst no attempt was made to provide an author bio. The writing of the stories I've read is competent and stylistically they would have fitted in well with the kinds of authors who submitted to Loring while they were active.

Part Two: Written Of Smoke 2: Single Mothers

The anthology under review is built around the broad theme of starting smoking situations involving single mothers. As with the previous volume, the first and second stories are both what might be termed 'classic' narratives as they involve girls in their early teens starting. The last story features an inversion this reviewer has not seen since An02's 'The Crusader'(1) and SStoryman's 'The Affair'(2), a non-smoking mother starting smoking after her daughter has.

Part Three: Comments

Having read two volumes of the authors work, it's clear that whoever was behind the name 'Daniel Gary Leon', they were not a 'Loring Era' author publishing through Amazon under a new name. They have a fairly distinct and consistent set of 'literary ticks' across the now six stories I've read.(3) This is as mentioned in my last review of an anthology by this author, the problem that SStoryman suffered from towards the end of their career. The author is still a good writer, but the common elements are starting to stack against them.

They are still however capable of producing effective stories. The first and third of the stories in this collection are probably the best of the set, with the third rating higher than the first.

It's the third story where the author makes best use of the 'common elements', the divorce situation provides a clear plot driver for many of the daughters actions, her revelations that her father regarded her as nothing more than a possession to be kept from his wife makes her attachment to the one person amongst her fathers revolving door of women who treated her as a person understandable.

It's also in this story that the author demonstrates that 'literary ticks' don't have to be used the same way every time, in this story suspicions that someone has become pregnant as a teenager(4) are used to drive a key character meetup towards the end of the story.

This volume has more issues than the one reviewed previously.(5) Nevertheless it is still worth reading, with the first story containing some genuinely humerous moments and the third being appropriately dramatic.

Recommended.

Part Four: Chapters/Episodes

1. Princess Anna
2. Polly's Pleasure
3. Backwards: Kelly and Monica

Notes

1. This story can be found in the Noble Leaf Library in the 'Anthology of An02', it's also the 8th volume in the Noble Leaf Original Series. A review can be found in the 14th volume of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review series.
2. This story can be found in the 1st volume of the 'SStoryman Anthology', the review is in the 14th volume of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review series.
3. The common plot elements I've noted are: (a). Unplanned Teenage Pregnancies. (b). Divorce situations. (c).The effects of inhaling the smoke from the tip of a cigarette. (d). Geeks smoking. (e). Smoking helping with academic prowess
4. The character in question has not.
5. That review can be found in the 28th volume of the Consolidated Smoking Fetish Fiction Review.
