Written Of Smoke 4: First Person (Daniel Gary Leon) - A Review

Warning: This Review Contains Spoilers

Part One: The Author

The author was active on Amazon between 2015 and 2018 and released four anthologies in the 'Written of Smoke' series during that time. Unlike Linzi Dixon or Kaitlyn Bringhurst no attempt was made to provide an author bio. The writing of the stories I've read is competent and stylistically they would have fitted in well with the kinds of authors who submitted to Loring while they were active. It's clear from common elements(1) that appear across the stories I've read so far that the author, whoever they actually were, was not a 'Loring Era' author publishing on Amazon under a new name.

Part Two: Written Of Smoke 4: First Person

This collection, the last of the four released by the author, features three stories written in the first person.

Part Three: Comments

The first story starts off well, but scenes involving females masturbating while they smoke with the aid of stuffed toys put this reviewer off rapidly. The second story, like the equivalent story in the previous volume(2),opens with the point-of-view character proclaiming themselves to be a friend of the author, thus implying that what is to follow has some basis in reality. However the entire plot is built off the authors common plot elements and so this reviewer judges it to be pure fiction, rather than built off another readers suggestions.

As with the first and second volumes in the series the last story is the one that turns out to be best in the set, certainly it's more interesting than either of the two that preceded it. The narrator in this tale is a former anti-smoker who embraces the habit and what it can bring her. Overall the last story is an effective character study, the real fault lies in the author continuing to describe the protagonist masturbating while she smokes after having established how she feels about this act at that point in her story. The detailed descriptions are redundant plotwise.

In conclusion, it's clear that when it came time to write the stories in this volume the author felt they had run out of ideas and was trying to up the sexual content to compensate. For that reason I do not recommend this volume.

Part Four: Chapters/Episodes

1. Jessica's Compulsion
2. Lonna: Friendship Improved
3. Eden: Fifteen and Fat

Notes

1. The common plot elements I've noted are: (a). Unplanned Teenage Pregnancies. (b). Divorce situations. (c).The effects of inhaling the smoke from the tip of a cigarette. (d). Geeks smoking. (e). Smoking helping with academic prowess (f). Females experiencing orgasms while they smoke.
