Subject: FFS…ABC of Smoking is kind of…annoying…me

For shits and giggles (not), I decided I'd search for "Smoking by Denise" on a few different search engines.

Shouldn't have.

DuckDuckGo gave one result, Google wasn't much better, coming back with more links, but only a couple were relevant.

I figured I'd give Yandex a shot, it was better, but I dunno, something, my instinct, always tells me to not trust…I guess no search engine can be trusted, we know they harvest data. We need our own search engine, our own infrastructure, and the surface level web can shit itself and go home.

I had a bit of a scroll anyway, it threw up at least 5 pages of results, but I couldn't be bothered going past the first page.

Something did catch my attention though a link to a PDF, and I was pretty sure I knew what it was going to be, and I was right.

azbuka.pdf (alphabet.pdf) was the ABC of Smoking, the Russian variant of an early version of the Smoking by Denise web site.

But I threw the document at Google Translate anyway.

I downloaded the translated PDF, and at a skim, it's readable, Google appears to have improved a bit.

The result is still kind of SbD, but it isn't. Whoever the author was has put their own spin on it, and I'm thinking it might be worth preserving. The file is 113 pages, but the text and formatting is a bit of a mess, never trust a machine to do a man's work, right?

Can I read or speak Russian? Nyet.

So I'm going to do some heavy lifting, might take a while.

I'd like to know who the author was, I'd like to give them due credit. I'd also like to date this work, I know it originates from a version of the SbD site that predates my own work, and was converted to PDF at some point. A get info gives me today's date and time of download, but, and holy crap baskets, an author. Hold on.

Yuri Kuznetsov.

Shit, mate, you could have put a date on your work.

And poking around in the PDF data, publication date is 19 Dec 2010 at 5:18 am.

Well, that's those questions answered.

Looks like Yuri did his work after mine, based on something older than mine. Yuri may not have been the original author, just the guy who took the text and pictures, and put them in a PDF. Dunno.

Looks like it's PDF to Text time. Let's Goooo!

I'll keep you all updated. Bung a nice cover on it, Foreword, fix the formatting…why do I do things?

Nick
