- Compliments Only! NEW school shoutouts! -- Fan, 20:20:36 10/10/18 Wed [12]
I’d like to start a positive thread!
I would love to hear what your most notable up-and-coming new schools are.
If you have seen a new school (less than 3 years), in the USA or Canada that has taken off and shown a lot of promise, some great systems or cute new costumes, will you share your compliments here?
I swear I’m not fishing, I just sometimes see unfamiliar school names in results and wonder who all these new schools are!
Thanks, and have a wonderful October! Oireachtas is coming!

- Moderation is the key. Too much of anything is bad for you. Classes can help, but your child should not be doing high impact physical activity 7 days a week. Impact does help stimulate bone growth young or old, but your body has to have time for the process to occur, for your body to heal. If you have any question as to how much training is too much I would talk to your child's pediatrician/consult a physical therapist. (NT) -- Everyone needs at least 1 day off per week, 18:32:18 02/08/18 Thu

- Fairly new to ID. When browsing Voy boards there seems to be a running theme after every competition about unfair judging, corruption etc. It was so bad on UK board past 24hr about all Scot results that a particularly poisonous thread was removed this morning. Wondering how long this has been the case. Also wondering before there was internet, social media etc how it would be handled. Now it seems the accusations appear before the competition has even started. Genuinely wondering if it really is so bad or is it whipped up more by social media posts? -- -, 03:18:41 09/29/18 Sat [7]

- Before the internet, nobody new the results unless they were at the feis and then if they didn't like the results, there was nowhere to complain. These days, as we know, it is very easy to complain about anything at all, especially when it's anon, the worst comes out in people. The UK board is an embarrassment, the fact that children are identified is shameful. There's nothing wrong with complaining if something isn't right and having an adult conversation about it, but that's not what happens on that board. (NT) -- -, 14:33:27 09/29/18 Sat
- I suppose pre internet it would be a chat amongst the mothers as they left the feis. Then they’d either go home happy or lick their wounds and prepare for the next one! Agreed the UK board is appalling lately. I can’t bear to see children named and criticised. Those who do it are shameful (NT) -- -, 15:27:07 09/29/18 Sat
- Exactly, before the internet, we got the feis schedule the day before the feis, turned up and danced, went home either happy or not and that was it! Parenting/people is/are different now. It seems no one can say no to their child, children grow up having everything handed to them, if a child wants something, they are given it. Unfortunately, you can't be given dance talent and first places have to be earned (in most cases!). These days it's as if not winning entitles the "loser" to stamp their feet and have a tantrum about how unfair everything is. We had a parent at our school who told their dd if she won the O she could have a new iphone, dd didn't win but was given the phone anyway "because she was so upset at not winning" what does that teach the child? That if you complain loud enough, you will get what you want even if you don't deserve it. Seems the whole world is now that spoiled child (NT) -- -, 13:20:24 10/01/18 Mon
- There are not really that many people on Voy. It is juts the same few pushing the same story over and over and over. At least Adam owns his nonsensical rants! (NT) -- LOL, 16:14:28 10/01/18 Mon
- Would be super helpful to have a transparent site where you can give reviews on adjudicators. (NT) -- What do you think?, 10:29:29 12/12/18 Wed
- That’s why I quit the main board. It’s very sad indeed when you read some of the judgmental, and at times very hateful remarks, people say to each other. (NT) -- Old Mom, 08:46:40 12/13/18 Thu
- Do Male judges judge differently? -- Let's discuss here, 06:54:53 09/24/18 Mon [8]
"I know this comes across as a sweeping generalisation but here hoes...My dancer always places highly with female judges but never male ones. It's got to the point now that she doesn't want to dance if a male judge is on the panel. She's a very elegant dancer but maybe the male judges are looking for other qualities? Asked tc & she said it's all in our imaginations which maybe it is!"

- We never really notice a difference between male and female. We notice that for some reason dd does better with overseas AD's than she sometimes does with local. Is there a different style, or something different about overseas dancers that dd somehow has? who knows. The other thing is that we tried a brown wig (closer to her natural color, no need for blonde spray!) for about 6 months and her scores went way down, we quickly went back to blonde and up they went again. (NT) -- -, 13:48:02 09/24/18 Mon
- Have had a mind coach tell my daughter "what you think will happen, is going to happen." So if your dancer sees a male judge, she may have already given up and not danced her best. Power of suggestion is very strong. Sometimes it is all in the dancer's mind. She needs to think differently and may get different results. (NT) -- worth a try, 10:52:46 10/02/18 Tue
- Super interesting conversation! (NT) -- Thanks, have learned a lot, 10:28:32 12/12/18 Wed
- Mine is the opposite. She does much better with male ADs than female ADs. An example was the last feis we went to. The male AD gave her 3rd overall, while one female AD gave her 4th overall but the other female AD tanked her. I have no idea why. Maybe she is more powerful? - Do you think CLRG will ever do a teacher training program? -- Support, 13:28:57 10/17/18 Wed [14]
It seems like there isn’t a whole lot of fostering of teaching skill that happens in the certification process. They have added grade exams to determine technical competence, even if they haven’t removed the dancing portion of the exam.
But teaching is more than personal technical prowess. There is so much more that goes into being a good teacher, and it would be nice to have some sort of bridging certification between competitive dancer and full fledged independent teacher.
What could be done?

- What about a tier approach? I think the grade exams are a good idea but I do think it needs to be shortened, with maybe just 8 or 9 grades instead of the 12 now offered, which seems to be a problem. Maybe at the end of the first 3, you teach beginners, under a supervision of a TCRG. Then the next 3, teaching Novice & Prizewinners and so on into the champion levels, such as teaching just first Prelims then OCs. Maybe someone with more insight into this can offer variations or can tweak it. (NT) -- Just some thoughts, 11:31:20 11/14/18 Wed

Not always directed at just one person, but two girls tend to gang up on someone nearly every class and whisper, have group texts or say awful things right to their face. - Reporting a TC to the CLRG for abuse. -- ex-dancer, 13:55:14 09/25/18 Tue [25]
I danced years ago and suffered from immense emotional abuse and covert physical abuse from my TC. The humiliation and pain I suffered under TC was normal to me as a child because I was subject to abuse in my home life. I also suffered from low-self esteem and had a very meek personality so I believe this made me an easy target for TC.
I have been in therapy and only have come to terms with the things TC did in recent years. It has hurt me deeply. I recently looked up said TC and was sickened to see that they are still teaching. I also looked up the CLRG child protection policy and TC has broken most of the rules for teacher's code of conduct within that policy.
The MeToo movement has made me want to speak up because I don't want this to happen to another child but I have a lot of concerns about not being believed. If I have to face TC again and nothing ends up being done about it, it will be like being re-victimised. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? Or dealt with the CLRG about any sort of rule-breaking issue with a TC? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Are there any alumni from your school you are in contact that can corroborate your experience and add their voice? I'd say don't take any silence from CLRG as an answer. If they don't fix it, out the school. Bad reviews, naming and shaming on this and other message boards. But do try to get it handled within CLRG first. Can you contact the head of your region and ask them what would be the best procedure? I'm sorry that person (I won't even call them a teacher... they don't deserve the honor) was so cruel to you. - I am happy to leave this here, I also think it is an important message as so many people, dancers and parents, need to be aware of what can be going on right in front of our faces, we trust that people we hand our children over to will do the right thing and thankfully in most cases they do. If this helps one other child or one other parent to notice that something isn't right with their child, it makes it worthwhile leaving up. I will add also, that this isn't just aimed at dance teachers, this is for any adult who comes into contact with your child. (NT) -- moderator, 15:24:16 09/28/18 Fri

- Discussion? -- Bring to life, 09:39:47 09/19/18 Wed [29]
With the "main" board under another onslaught of porn spam, someone mentioned this board. I haven't been in awhile so I hopped over.
Looks like it's full of advertisements for feiseanna... good info, but nothing to draw traffic over.
We need some discussions going. I'll see what I can post, but please join in if we want this moderated board to take off.
I'll start.
What does everyone think of the new podcast by Martin Percival?
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-irish-dance-podcast/id1370412642?mt=2
He's already interviewed quite a variety of Irish dance teachers, performers, adjudicators and choreographers.
I find it very interesting how the sentiments about how ostentatious and cost-prohibitive costuming has become are pretty universal (with a few exceptions), but it seems everyone acknowledges that they have no idea how to stop the speeding train.
Take a listen. What do you think?

- Thanks for this link, I had never seen/heard these podcasts. I will have to work out how to do it on my phone! (I' old lol). My thoughts on costumes inside... -- -, 13:43:30 09/19/18 Wed
- As a general concept, I like the look. Wigs are great, I love bling, tan and make up fine. But I like the look at the Worlds, at the top level. I don't think prelim kids need the same level of costuming. I don't think PW need anywhere near the same level. I think there's a level of age-appropriateness too - I don't think it's sensible to spend $2000 on a Gavin for a four year old. Or even a seven year old for that matter. I don't get to spend other people's money for them, but I do think "the look" should be reserved for the top levels and filter down the grades and ages accordingly. The trouble is there is NO WAY to police levels of blinginess because it's all subjective. You couldn't even count diamantes because a taller child would need more than a smaller child. I don't have the answer either! But I know that all black outfits will NEVER be the answer. (NT) -- ., 06:08:18 09/20/18 Thu
- I think it would take an multi-podium champ paring down her look to have a real impact. If there were a dancer or two hoisting a globe in a $1200 dress instead of a $3500 dress it might have an impact on the 'keeping up with the Joneses' craziness we see. (NT) -- I don't know what else might change it, 10:30:41 09/20/18 Thu
- The powers that be just need to do a cut and dry rule like the Midwest “no bling” U10 rule—something along the lines of no-bling/no make-up(U12?)/no tanner(?) until Preliminary/Open champs in ANY competition world-wide. And then feis/major folks need to enforce it! It’s not that hard really?? More: -- Broke mom, 11:59:10 09/20/18 Thu
- Like the other posters I also agree that it is out of hand especially for younger dancers. I'm in the midwest and the U10 no bling rule helps but it is not enough. I would love to see a requirement of school dresses only for grades dancers (or at least thru Novice). (NT) -- dm, 10:13:56 09/22/18 Sat
- Lol, saw today on Instagram about a dancer receiving their TENTH Gavin?? (I assume it meant the SAME dancer?) Yowza—I might be a bit jealous! We can’t even afford one! ;) (NT) -- That’s a lot—good for them!, 16:53:35 09/23/18 Sun
- I am noticing a lot of black (no costumes) the last few feis. More than usual. It may be the time of year. But could this be because it is soooo much easier to get ready with no wig and dress? Pretend to be between dresses??? -- ID Mom, 09:55:51 09/22/18 Sat [10]

- YES!! My dd has a nice, slim build and I think she looks just as nice in all black as a solo dress. I also thinks she sometimes scores higher in all black. Not sure if it is due to her standing out more or if she just wears it well (tall and thin). I let her decide and often she chooses all black (and a simple, small wig) instead of the solo. (NT) -- dm, 10:16:42 09/22/18 Sat
- , I LOVE the simplicity of the look and it's amazing how much more you watch the feet when there's no bling distracting. I would wholly embrace an all black competitive system EXCEPT I love the costumes 1920-1990 that had the beautiful celtic designs, classy hemlines and folk look that goes with the music and dancing. (NT) -- Can't we go back?, 13:18:12 09/22/18 Sat
- I think it is that some may be waiting for a new dress for O's. I think it's a great choice but would not like to see a rule that requires all black. It's great for those with a nice figure but could be so mortifying for changing bodies or those who are not thin and could lead to dancers not competing. Also... -- -, 15:22:01 09/22/18 Sat
- Our TC strongly discourages it. We have one dancer at our school that has perfect feet, and is absolutely tiny, but the skin-tight black shows off her arms, which always look wide, mostly because she is so small, but not noticeable in a costume. I vote for costumes any day of the week, and just simplify the hair, makeup and tanner unless it's a major. (NT) -- my 2 cents, 06:51:37 09/24/18 Mon
- How far could a dancer get wearing just black? As an adult, I just don't buy into the pageant look, but am competing in champs now and wonder where my future could be if I sell my TaT dress and compete in black. (NT) -- Any idea?, 06:52:16 09/24/18 Mon
- Girls in basic black on the podium at our last O. For all the hype, I believe skill beats costume. Maybe (not sure) Costume can tip the scale where two dancers are exactly equal in skill. (NT) -- ., 08:03:42 09/24/18 Mon
- LOVE all back -- JuJu, 08:21:24 09/24/18 Mon
- We're bucking the system A LOT and wearing all black many times when she has the dress. I wish it was always that way - then save a dress for majors and O. (NT) -- C, 12:58:23 09/24/18 Mon

- New Vanishing Lake Music Available -- Katie Grennan (TCRG), 09:23:03 06/15/18 Fri [1]
My latest release for Irish dancers - "The Vanishing Lakes Collection" - is available NOW for pre-sale on iTunes and will officially released on June 25th.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-vanishing-lake-collection-bonus-tracks/1396893172
*Reserve your download on iTunes NOW and instantly receive a download of a Presentation Reel track, perfect for class or dance outs!*
As a TCRG myself, I've designed this album to make class more efficient, allowing dancers to focus on endurance and rhythm work.
Tracks are laid out 4 different ways:
----**Entire Set TWICE in a row** (eliminates wasted time in class for those waiting in line to dance)
----**Full Step Part TWICE followed by Set TWICE** (for endurance runs)
----**Basic Set WITHOUT percussion** (encourages dancers to listen to the MUSIC itself, not the heavy beat that is embedded into most Irish dance tracks)
----**Basic Set** (for good, oldfashioned practice =))
Thanks and hope you enjoy!

- There are SO many dresses for sale right now. Just a crazy amount. I've seen some beautiful dresses for sale that are still for sale months later and I can't imagine why (priced well) except that there are so many. -- Buy used PSA, 12:32:17 11/16/17 Thu [20]

- Agree, our TC whilst not making it a rule, advises all dancers to get a new dress every year so they can get a higher resale price on the "old" dress. Dresses are being sold and still look brand new. It's crazy. (NT) -- -, 13:08:20 11/16/17 Thu
- I agree! I've been following used dress sites for years since I help with costuming for our school. I've never seen this many "new" dresses for sale. It's a buyers' market. We've had so many families have troubles with brand new dresses getting delivered late, not fitting, etc. I really recommend buying a used, "nearly new" dress to most of our dancers. We do that (my dd is OC), can pick something very modern but not cookie-cutter, get better fit, and don't wait for months hoping a dress arrives in time for a major. (NT) -- Just make sure they'll accept returns, 11:18:21 12/03/17 Sun
- Yes there are tons! I wish sellers would be more realistic about their pricing though and not say things likes "only worn 10 times!" bc that is actually a lot of times. Between 1-3 times is a selling point imo (NT) -- nt, 12:37:20 12/08/17 Fri
- I'm getting ready to list a dress for sale and would like some constructive imput (more inside) -- Want a fast sale, but don't want to give it away either, 06:39:21 01/31/18 Wed
- What did you originally pay for dress and crystals? I think for a dress that's really only 6 months old, this is a reasonable price. A lot also depends on the design and colors. My experience has been that our pink dresses sold quickly, but yellow took a lot longer. $1200 if definitely too low. (NT) -- hth, 12:49:11 01/31/18 Wed
- I paid $1200 for a one-year-old Elevation, so you could start higher than that. Just be prepared to (NT) -- accept an offer, 16:25:45 01/31/18 Wed
- I sold an 8 month old CS for $1900, paid over $3000 for it new -- Dm, 07:14:44 02/01/18 Thu
- How fast do you want/need it to sell? Personally I would prefer to take a little less and sell it right away than hold on to it while it depreciates. Have sold two Elevations and two CS's - the longest I ever held on to it was two weeks. One sold in 2 hours. I would price it at $1600 and see how you go unless it's an unusual color/style. a (NT) -- Good luck!!, 08:03:10 02/02/18 Fri
- Thank you so much! This was so helpful! I'll start at $1600 and see how it goes. (NT) -- Grateful for the help!, 09:55:42 02/02/18 Fri
- I would put it at $1400 if you want it sold. People are buying now for NANS, and you’re competing with dresses that were made in the fall. Your dress will be over a year old (barely, but it still matters to the buyer) by NANS, so they’re much more likely to buy the “made for Oireachtas” dresses that are priced around $1600. So you need to undercut them if you want it sold. (NT) -- hth, 16:27:18 02/16/18 Fri
- I recently bought a 6mo old Gavin for $1600, so pretty comparable to what you are selling. (NT) -- hth, 06:33:10 02/20/18 Tue
- Honestly, it's difficult to answer whether or not the price of a certain used dress is reasonable without seeing the dress. All dresses that are the same age do not hold the same value. (NT) -- my opinion, 11:00:46 04/24/18 Tue
- With such an overstock of used dresses on the market, you think more would come down around the 1,000 mark. (NT) -- Pity, 19:26:41 03/14/18 Wed
- Unfortuunately for us- dancers size is not something within the norm and extensive alteration would be needed which adds to the cost. So we just go new - started with 2 from SNDM then to BNDM when she got to champs. (NT) -- I would buy used if we could, 19:14:44 04/18/18 Wed
- Has the other board closed? -- Former DM, 05:47:26 04/20/18 Fri [5]
