Subject: Barea's a punk!

I was going to post similar thought after the first BU-NU game, but thought it would sound like sour grapes after NU won and Barea hit a big three at the end. But I've watched two BU-NU games now and it's absolutely true: Barea plays like a punk. He baits other players verbally and physically, he tries to draw retaliatory fouls, he's sneaky dirty, and he complains to the refs about every call that goes against him.

He's a talented, if undisciplined player, and doesn't need to use such tactics. And if he doesn't clean up his act, sometime in some game, someone's going to set a pick and stick out an elbow and Barea's going to lose some teeth.

Barea plays like a punk.

Whats the difference between playing hardnosed basketball and being a punk??? Answer The punks play for other teams. The guys playing hardnosed basketball play for your team.

[> [> [> All Time Punk Team of the early 1990s -- NU Hoop Fan, 12:11:54 03/03/03 Mon

You weren't sitting behind me at the game on Sunday??? We were saying the same thing....

I was talking with some longtime NU fans and we were saying how if Barea played for another school we'd think he was a punk, but until you know the kid, you wouldn't know any differently.

I always thought that Kenny White of Vermont was a punk when I was in school, until I met him his senior year out in Burlington after the game, he was a great kid, just played with a chip on his shoulder.

Same goes for the following players (we came up with an all-NAC Punk team from the 1990s, pre expansion):

Kenny White - UVM
Marty Higgins - Maine
Larry Griffiths - Hartford
Marcellus Anderson - NU
Mo Brighthaupt - NU
Scott Spinelli - BU
Jeff Timberlake - BU
Tony DaCosts - BU
Matt Johnson - UVM
The white kid from Siena who did nothing but shoot 3's on those great Siena teams..(I can't remember his name)

What do they all have in common... Very good players who all played with high intensity and pissed off the fans of their opponents.

One man's punk is another man's hard nosed player.

I do see the opposition's view on Barea and the way he plays, and I don't necessarily disagree, except that he's not a punk.

I only played hard and sometimes took it out on the other team because Coach fogel always coached "give it 100% percent or don't come on the court" at all.

Marc Brown was not a "white guy". If you mean Tom Huerter, you'll probably be amused to find out he's now one of Siena's radio guys.

Siena also had a white kid named Mike Brown at that time (90-92)

Scott Spinelli, Jeff Timberlake, and Tony DaCosta? You've got to be kidding. Not only wasn't Spinelli (a walkon) not very good, he hardly ever played. Timberlake and DaCosta formed one of the best backcourts in league history. Both were hardnosed and certainly must have pissed off opposing fans who didin't like losing to them, but I don't remember either of them ever acting of being accused of being punks.

Now if you want to name a BU player that did have some punk in him, Raja Bell fits the bill. Despite his obvious talent, his on-court and off-court behavior got him thrown out of school. Interesting footnote: he too was from Miami.

I did forget my captain of the all punk team: Lamont Hough of Northeastern. He was a punk, on and off the court. I'll NEVER deny that one.

I forgot.. no one from BU is ever a punk.. Sorry about that. I didn't mention Raja Bell because I didn't want to incite a riot on the board. I figured that was a given.

You don't remember anyone of ever accusing Timberlake or DaCosta of being punks? Ask anyone from Siena or NU about that. I remember distinctly at the 1989 tournament listening to Mike Deane hold court with the Siena media saying that they got away with more stuff on the court than any back court pair that he had seen in years. I think that was the year there were no fans at the games....

Spinelli talked more smack per minute played than anyone I've ever seen. Even from the bench he had an attitude. I realize he didn't play much. He did, however always have a tan that rivaled Chris Monasch's. His claim to fame was that he coached Yinka Dare at Milford Academy.

Did I say no one at BU was ever a punk? I specifically mentioned Raja Bell. So quit putting up straw men to knock down.

Actually I WAS at the 1999 tournament. How I got in shall remain a secret. If Deane said what you say he did, I don't remember hearing or reading it. But even if he did, it's an opposing coach talking before a game and trying to get an edge with the officials. And what does "getting away with stuff" mean anyway? Or are you a mind reader too?

As for asking someone from NU about BU, that's really going to get a fair, unbiased judgment isn't it.

Finally, Spinellis' talking smack and having a tan hardly qualifies as being a punk.

I'm glad someone finally had the courage to call this kid a punk because thats exactly what he is!!!!!! I was at the first BU game when he elbowed a BU player right where it hurts!!!!!! The kid is bad news all the way around.
