Subject: Primetime Shootout

Got back this morning at about 4 am from the event in Trenton. I was able to catch four great games (travel plans for Friday were cancelled due to the weather). Here's what I caught...

McQuaid vs. Harrisburg - McQhaid almost blew a 20 point lead late as the Harrisburg press proved to be too much. Tyler Relph stepped up big down the stretch, despite some late turnovers. Relph is very good with the ball and a great shooter, but I feel that jumping to the Big East wasn't his best move. Relph would be a better fit in the A-10. I don't think he is quick enough or tall enough for the Big East. Ryan Pettinella on the other hand, should be a monster in the Ivy League at Penn. Great hands, strong with the ball, works hard on the block and has a big frame. Sorry to say for JoeStag, but Marty O'Sullivan didn't look good at all. In fact he looked quite awful. I hope I just saw him on an off day, because I think Fairfield is headed in the right direction with the new arena, improved recruiting, etc. The thing is the kid is 6'5, doesn't really have a post game, isn't quick enough to play outside, and had the ball ripped out of his hands on a number of occasions. Sorry Joe..at least be happy you got Van Schaick.

St. Raymond's vs. Lanier, Miss - Lanier has a PG named Monty Ellis. He could start at Siena today at 2 against Iona in my opinion. He is jet quick, a deadly shooter, and fearless on the court. Remember that name. He is a sophomore. St. Ray's won the game on a buzzer beater by Syracuse signee Louie McCroskey. He was ver impressive and poised on the court, has a great mid-range game and knows it. Could fill in nicely for the Orange, though not as spectacularly, for the Cuse when Carmelo leaves.

Our Savior NY vs. Brookhaven Ohio - Not the prettiest game, but Oklahoma signee's Andrew Lavender and Brandon Faust led the way for Brookhaven. Lavender is about 5'5, but reminds me of Doremus Bennerman. He can score from anywhere, despite a bit of an off shooting night. He will be a nice replacement to Hollis Price. Faust on the other hand, dunks everything in sight. Our Savior has an impressive squad with Valpo signee Omar Sylla and junior superstar Juan Palacios.

Lebron James vs. um...well, um - was another team there? Just kidding, Westchester has a talented squad but they didn't show it last night. You would have thought Jesus Christ walked into the building last night the way kids were going crazy, cameras were snapping, and everyone was standing as the James Gang came onto the floor. Lebron is enjoying his moment. His shot was on last night, and he even got some Jordan-like calls from the officials. Trevor Ariza is great, but probably not great enough to save Steve Lavin's job at UCLA. The thing about MSMSV is that James' teammates know their role. Get him the ball, and when the double come expect to get it back. Defer to the big guy and he will lead the way.

My thing is, no matter what anyone says or how many points he scores, I don't think James is ready for the jump yet. A year or two of college would be best for him, but that's not an option now. Could you imagine the line standing outside his dorm room of people wanting autographs if he went to college? I don't think it would ever stop?

Now I'm rambling...I'm out!
