Hi, my name is Karoline and I just turned 19. I’m will be starting my 2nd year college in the fall and convinced my parents to let me move in with my grandparents (mom’s parents) who live in the same small town as the school. Mom has a great relationship with them but she warned me they’re strict and will be with me.

I had a some problems this past year as a freshman, nothing major, just some issues with responsibility, and my parents were thinking of making me move home instead of continuing to pay for this school. So this seemed like a good solution. I knew they were strict and Mom insisted that I’d be under their care and would have to follow this rules and be subject to their consequences. I didn’t dream how serious that would be. But now I’m stuck!

I’ve been here a full week now and things are already changing. I don’t deny it’s good for me, it’s just hard. I hope it’s okay to post here, I was hoping I had someone to share with because I can’t tell any of my friends.

Thanks! As someone who rarely got grounded growing up, it’s all new to me. I had maybe 2 rules and now I have a bunch, I’m more like a kid than an adult.

I’ve only lived here a week so haven’t really gotten into much trouble yet. Mainly I’m grappling with their new rules. I thought it would be a few chores but it’s so much more. My nana is big on modesty and being a proper woman and she went through all of my clothes and threw a bunch out. I do have chores, a curfew, a bedtime, and other things. I’m 19! A sophomore in college. My friends don’t know all of it but what they do know, they think is hilarious.

Dear Karoline,
I'm sorry to say it but your grandparents have all the right to give you their rules. I can understand that for you it's not easy as you say "holy cow, I'm 19, not 12" (well maybe not really with those words but that's the concept, uh?) but actually they have big responsibility on you and they want to be on the safe side.

I may suggest to strictly adhere to the given rules for some time to make them understand you can be trusted, than maybe you may ask for something more. I exclude anyway something like stay out till morning or something like that.

Bye R.

I’ve already said that and they made it clear I’m still a kid to them until I prove otherwise.

My Nana took a bunch of my clothes to goodwill and then took me shopping at Walmart for new, less revealing stuff. She even went through my bras and panties!

They bought a paddle I’m so scared of it, it’s going to be a long summer.

Hi Karoline,
it's going to be a good summer where to learn the great values of the past. Don't be scared of a paddle, just be scared of the everyday badder world around.

Have a good time there. You'll remember that with nostalgia for so long time, believe me!

Bye R.
