Joel Bender, who co-wrote and co-directed the 2014 documentary The True Adventures of Raoul Walsh and served as a film editor on The Amazing Race, has died. He was 72.

Bender died in his sleep April 24 of natural causes in Los Angeles, his wife of 28 years, Manette Beth Rosen, announced.

Bender also worked as a writer, editor, film editor and/or producer on such projects as Gas Pump Girls (1979), the Laura Prepon-starring Karla (2006) and TV’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Born in Brooklyn on June 9, 1948, Bender attended the School of the Visual Arts in New York, served as an assistant to noted film historian and preservationist William K. Everson and became friends with blacklisted Body and Soul screenwriter Abraham Polonsky in London.

An avid collector of rare films, Bender became involved in film preservation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He also was a guest lecturer at the college level and taught classes and conducted workshops on film history and directing.

Survivors include his brother-in-law, Richard, sister-in-law Nancy and nieces Blair and Bonnie.
