Subject: Actress Bridget Hanley ('Here Come the Brides'), 80

Bridget Hanley has died. She was my beloved friend of 38 years. She was a sprite, a lively imp of infectious laughter, a loving and kind soul, and one of the most ferociously talented actresses I have ever encountered. She was Eleanor to my Henry in THE LION IN WINTER. I talked Theatre West and Charlie Mount into producing the play, mainly because I wanted to attempt the role of Henry. I also wanted to do the play with Bridget, as I felt only she could hold her own as Eleanor against the magnificence I imagined I would bring to Henry. As it turned out, she wiped the floor with me -- and I was fairly good. Her vitality, even at nine years my senior, far outstripped my own, and her sense of the language -- god, she was more Eloquent of Aquitaine than Eleanor! She was one of the most joyous people to be around that anyone could imagine. Her magnanimity of spirit embraced all who were lucky enough to come within her orbit. Her humor, like a rising tide, lifted all boats. I also played in SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY with her, and she broke hearts and ripped laughter from the guts of every audience. Those who know her only from her 1970s series HERE COME THE BRIDES know only the speck at the peak of the iceberg of her talent. But most of all, she was the most loving of friends, the most loyal of wives, and the most devoted of mothers. I have adored her from my first meeting, and I shall continue to love her all the days I live.

Henry: I hope we never die.

Eleanor: So do I.

Henry: Do you think there's any chance of it?

Goodbye, my queen.
