Former Texas Longhorns running back Jim Bertelsen has died at the age of 71, according to a report from Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman. Bertelsen suited up for the Longhorns from 1969-1971 before he was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 1972 NFL Draft. A cause of Bertelsen's death has not yet been given.

Bertelsen, who ranks among one of the more decorated running backs in Longhorns program history, was a key member of the 1969 Texas team that won the outright national championship under legendary head coach Darrell Royal as well as the 1970 team that split a national championship. Bertelsen rushed for 740 yards during the 1969 season before rushing for more than 800 yards during each of his final two years with the program.

All said, Bertelsen rushed for 2,510 yards while recording 33 touchdowns on the ground during his time with the Longhorns. Bertelsen ranks 14th in program history in all-time rushing yards. Bertelsen's time with the program featured three Southwest Conference titles and a 30-game winning streak for Texas, one that started during the 1968 season and lasted deep into the 1970 season before the Longhorns dropped the Cotton Bowl vs. Notre Dame to conclude that campaign.

Upon being drafted by the Rams in 1972, Bertelsen played in the league through 1976. He was a Pro-Bowl selection during the 1973 season after rushing for 854 yards that year.

For his efforts on the Forty Acres, Bertelsen was inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor in 1996.

The news of Bertelsen's passing comes not long after that of another member of a national-championship Texas football team. Pete Lammons, a member of both the New York Jets' Super Bowl III championship squad and the 1963 Texas Longhorn football team that captured a national championship, died last Thursday after he fell off a boat and drowned while fishing on a reservoir in Texas, as reported by ESPN and confirmed by both the New York Jets Texas Athletics. Lammons was 77 years old.
