In regards to the 30sec lag in boot time, where the screen remains blank--this is caused by the motherboard testing the RAM. The more RAM you have installed, the longer it takes to check it all. You can actually disable this in OS 8 by holding down the Option key (or some combination of that and another modifier, sorry I can't remember exactly) while opening the Memory control panel and selecting the appropriate radio button.
