Sounds like some weird termination issue to me. Try attaching a terminator directly to the external SCSI port on the mobo and see what happens.

This is a weird thing you're noticing, though--the SCSI and the sound controller should be in no way related. I take it you're using an internal SCSI hard drive. You may want to see if it's terminated also. I know that on the 62xx series boards you can improve bus throughput if you attach a terminator to the external SCSI port, but this wasn't an issue with 5xx series machines. Quite strage regardless.
