Subject: Mystic as a WebCam Server? Ho ho ho!
In reply to: C. Johnson 's message, "Mystic as a WebCam Server" on 10:09:34 01/03/02 Thu

I do a fare amount of video conference here at home with my DSL line. I am not sure what you mean when you say "server". What are you trying to do? Do you want to post streaming video to your web page? Do you want to video conference with other folks?

What type of connector do you have on the end of your Color Quick Cam? Not USB I Presume?

Some things to keep in mind.....

Video conference/ web cams are *extreme* CPU and bandwidth hogs. To get good frame rates, you need a high powerd machine. If all you want to do is grab a image once every 5 minutes or so, and up load that to your web server, you could probably do it with your Mystic (if you could plug your camera into it). But forget 15 frames per second, color, or audio with a 40Mhz 68040. It will be terrible!

If I have not talked you out of it yet, try looking on ebay for some old Mac 68030 and 68040 White Pine CuSeeMe software. It might cost you $10.00. You can also find free Mac shareware CuSeeMe on the web (not White Pine, but shareware CuSeeMe before White Pine bought the rights).

Forget color and audio when you look for shareware CuSeeMe; just get the B&W/grey scale CUSeeMe (and even then, you will be dispointed).

The oldest Mac CuSeeMe I have is version 3.1.3. But it needs a Power PC processor 100Mhz or faster.

Have fun!
