Subject: another test

The woman walked down the brightly lit corridor slowly stopping at the closed door at the end. She read the name on the door and smiled. It’d been nearly a year since they’d last seen each other and her nervousness was now replaced with anticipation. Adjusting her purse strap she carefully knocked on the door, waiting for permission to enter. Finally she heard “Come in.” The woman took a deep breath and walked in, smiling at the sight before her. Behind stacks of files sat one of her dearest friends.
“If I didn’t know any better I’d believe you were actually working.”
Hank Gannon looked up and broke out into a huge grin. “Susannah!” He jumped out of his chair and quickly crossed the room, wrapping his former sister-in-law in his arms.
“How are you?” She asked after their embrace ended.
          “Hanging in. What about you?”
She shrugged. “I’ve been better. I wish I were here under better circumstances.”
“Actually, I’m surprised to see you. I didn’t think you and Sam Rappaport were that close.”
“We weren’t.” She replied, taking a seat in front of Hank’s desk. “Uh,” Susannah swallowed. “Nora specified that if anything were to happen to her or Sam that I was to gain custody of Matthew.”
Hank nodded knowingly. The funeral for Sam was scheduled for later that afternoon. He still hadn’t decided if he was going or not, their last conversation not being a pleasant one. Hank turned to see Susannah looking at him expectantly, her face laced with concern.
