Subject: Change of subject - why is Stags hockey so bad? Is Div. 1 a mistake?

I was thrilled we entered the MAAC Hockey League a ways back but we still can't get the program going. Does anyone on the board follow the team, and if so, what's the deal? Are they young or just overmatched?

Overmatched. The school is putting few scholarships and little resources into the program compared to the competition in the MAAC league. Some schools like Mercyhurst who are not Div 1 in their other sports are concentrating the bulk of the scholarships and resources into making hockey their only div 1 premier sport. FF has established tiers for its different sports and i do not thing hockey is a tier one sport. Anyone else no more info?

A couple of years ago they were out here to play Wayne State Univ. I thought they showed some promise as they had a young team & they were competitive with a very good WSU team. In fact that year they made the league playoffs. Don't know what's happened since but if we're not giving enough scholarships that could be a factor.

Frankly I'd rather see the school upgrade the hockey program & forget about football where we'll never be better than a lower tier 1A school. With just a few scholarships we could be very competitive.

Just saw we beat Bentley last night 7-2. We've now beaten them twice, Air Force once & tied UCONN. The neet game is against UCONN & if we can beat them we'll be 3-6-1 inleague play. Go Stags!!!

the team a couple of years ago almost went to a club level...many people spoke up and "saved" the program...we should be competive in the MAAC but I don't think they get many scholarships...frankly- we compete on an academic level with the likes of BC, and their hockey is tremendously successful...but we can't seem to recruit the player that decides BC is not for them..we are in the northeast...we should be able to get the players...it's a shame really because hockey is great to watch live and we could have a great program ( at a great arena as well)

I agree. Frankly I wasn't much of a hockey fan until '95. Then I bought season tickets to the Red Wings (more for business purposes) & i've been sold ever since. Not only is hockey a great spectator sport, the players are a special breed.

Watching Yzerman last year play on a knee so bad he could'nt walk without crutches tells you all you need to know about heart. Refreshingly, unlike other sports the # of guys with class outnumber the jerks by a wide margin. Go Stags, Go Wings!!!!
