Subject: CollegeRPI - we took a huge hit last night

Even though we won last night, we went down 25 positions. Some of it was due to the 296 ranking of Loyola, but 6 of our opponents lost last night (Yale, Depaul, St Johns, American, Charleston So., and UNCW). Only Iona won out of our opponents. We are now ranked just behind Manhattan.

Joe Stag, other than pride what diference does the RPI make? Is it for the NIT? If so, I can understand. Since you only play MAAC teams the rest of the way (I believe) you should be able to stay around 100 provided you win most of the games.

The CollegeRPI is one of the factors that the NCAA uses for At-Large Bids, Seedings, and the NIT uses for selection and somewhat for home court advantages. While Fairfield would not be in consideration for an at large bid, having a ranking near 100 would be huge difference than a 150 ranking when NCAA considers seeding. That could be the difference between a 13 and a 16 seed. Also the MAAC Ranking plays a huge role in that. We only need to look at last year, when Siena had to play in the NCAA PIG. Siena was much better thtn th e64-65th team in the Tourney..... but the RPI's could not justify it. Same can be said for the NIT.

Many people say that the CollegeRPI is skewed, and it is, the earlier you go into the season. But you can disagree with it all you want, complain about it all you want..... but it you don't try to understand it, and don't try to schedule teams that help you, then you are just hurting yourself. If you don't think its important, then you are just kidding yourself. Its not the ultimate factor..... its just one of the factors.

There are some indirect benefits of the CollegeRPI from my perspective..... one is pride, another is that others like (recruits) do look at rankings, and I think that other schools also look at a teams RPI when choosing what type of team they want to schedule.

Never realized its importance until you started streesing it. Coincidently, heard radio commentators mention it has become a handy way for tournament selection committees to sort through all the "who beat who" comparisons easily in order to find the truly superior teams.

Comments were made, for example, that UConn's padding of early wins through light OOC competition could come back to hurt them. (It certainly did not prepare them for OK.) It gives me new respect for the tough OOC scheduling that TOT pursues. In some case, gamely losses against tough competition conceivably could fare better in the NCAA committee's eyes than wins against light competition. Another reason to never play Sacred Heart...sorry couldn't resist.

It is all-important when it comes to discussing at-large bids. The women never would have received an at-large bid recently if they didn't have a good RPI.

Not sure how much it weighs into NIT selection, but I suspect it does.
