Stagman, Very good stats, but here are my interpretation of those numbers:
- I disagree, I actually think we need to shoot more from the outside. Let it Fly.
- Gai primarily takes 2 types of shots, dunks and 3 pointers..... and he does pretty well on both of them. Its his mid-game and posting up that needs to improve. I agree he should get more shots and I hope they come from Offensive rebounds..... that would be the best.
- Delfico actually shoots 41% now. I would like to see him shoot more 3 pointers, but he is only shooting 25% from the arc. But he still needs to shoot them. He connected on 42% last year, he can do it again. 8.6 shots/game is about right for Delfico as he does play the most minutes. Delfico shoots a lot of desparation shots when the clock is running down..... not his fault, but he should not shoot those as someone like Todd or Max is a better creator with a defender in their face and time running out.
- Garcia only takes 8.2 shots, but he does take a lot more because he gets fouled. When you look at both together, he attempts the most shots..... and most are on the inside.
- Todd shoots the right amount, but if he played more he would get more shots and I am OK with that. He shoots 39% from the arc, so he is another one that needs to let it fly.
- Sogadzi can create well, but has not finished well. He has to shoot if he has the confidence.
- Maxwell needs to shoot more than 5.7/game. He should get at least that many on O-Boards and Garbage points. Max also should post up, but since he is at SF, the middle is already too crowded. He needs time at PF.
- Bell needs to shoot more, as we need his outside shooting. I would also like to see him take it to the hoop more.
- Thomson, like Garcia, gets fouled a lot so his shots/game are misleading. Garcia is our best post player, but if Robbie has the right matchup, we should continue to feed him. Otherwise, Thomson could increase his shots by hitting the O-Boards.
- Goode shoots well, but he needs a lot of space because of his height and he does not have a quick release. He passes up 1-2 good shots a game that he sould take.

I defer to your judgment, since it is rare that I actually ever get to see the team play and you are The Dean of Fairfield hoops. :)
That being said, our strength should be our front line. Few MAAC teams can match it, so to "just let it fly" would seem to be going away from a potential strength. It's a shame that Deng and Gai only have an interior presence on defense, and not on offense. The team would be truly dangerous if those guys have some better skills in the lane.

I thought Stagman made some excellent points in his original post. I know Delficco is now shooting 41%, thanks to a 9-12 game but half those shots were easy buckets on breakaways that are thanks to Defensive play by Goode. I am not taking anything away from Nick simply trying to make a point that shooting percentage isn't everything. Nick's percentage in my opinion was low, not because he's a bad shooter, but because he has been forced to take too many desperation shots at the buzzer because no one else will shoot. We have to look not only at percentages, but percentages by locations. I.E. if our center shoots 50% because he makes 20% of his threes but 100% of his putbacks on offense rebounds, does that make him a 60% shooter in the low post? I don't think so.
I do believe that we need to feed the ball to the hire percentage shooters. But we need to get the ball to the high percentage shooters at a location on the floor where they hit a high percentage of their shots. Good coaching is understanding this issue, and running the offense so that players get touches in places where they can do damage. Some players have not had the right touches for us to truly evaluate their game. I.E, Maxwell at the three is not going to shoot over 50%, but at the four this kid is the real deal and will be a 50% shooter. Ajou on the other hand hits over 40% of his threes and under 40% from the low post. Passing Ajou the ball in the low post is not as high a percentage play as letting him hit the three.
Anyway, I think it is important to recognize what players are best from what spots and to work the offense accordingly

Stagman, I also agree with many of your points also. The overlying theme to our offense and shooting is that we don't have the prototypical offensive players, and we have different stars each game. Very hard to determine who will play well in a given game.
JCM, I also agree that we should take advantage of players strengths...... rather than try to force players to do what they are not cable of. IMO, Practice is the time you focus on improving your weakness, but During the game we should go with our strengths, and each player should know what they are capable of and play to their strengths.
The Best Example of a player not doing that was Jermaine Clark. He always tried to make plays that he was not capable of. I think Spann showed that tendency as a Senior also.
IMO, we all want the Dengs to be strong low post players, and eventually I think Roshown Mcleod will have the time to teach that part of the game to Gai. But right now I am OK if Gai gets his dunks, hits his threes, and can gets a few low post baskets..... thats sounds like 12-15ppg to me. I think he has the potential now to be a great offensive rebounder. If he does that, we have a 20+ppg scorer.
Thats why I disagree, when I hear people say we have all this talent. Yes, our younger players are talented..... but they still have a lot to grow, learn, and they are trying to find their offensive games. Our offense is a work in process offense. If Ajou was healthy, we would have some Offensive stability.
Defensively, we are solid..... because our Frosh came in with great defensive skills, and our experienced players hustle and play good "D". And we have the D-POY in Gai.
