Subject: Rider Report and Keys

- Rider is 5-6, lost their last 3 on the road. Theyhave 2 good wins vs Delaware and Princeton at home.

- Jerry Johnson (6-0) is their top player, he averages 17.5ppg and shoots 34% from the field, and 28% from 3.... all way down from last year. He shoots about 20 shots a ganme and can get very hot. He is very good, and I am sure his stats are down cause teams are focusing on him. He can create his own shot, and if you defend him well, he can back up and drain a 21 footer, and if you cover him there, he will hit the 24 footer.

- Robert Taylor (6-2) is a good PG who can score (12.6ppg). He can also hit the 3 (25-53) 47%.

- Laurence Young (6-3) athletic guard who can sky, scores at 12.2. He is streaky and exciting. If he gets on a roll, watch out.

- Reed and Wahlmann are their 2 big men at 6-10 and 6-9. They are not that quick or athletic..... except that Reed can be surprisingly effective. They both can pass and will probably play on the outside, setting a lot of picks.

- Rider goes mainly with those 5

- Any team that has their PG-SG-SF all averaging in double figures and all have made a lot of 3's is dangerous, especially at home. Rider has been streaky playing really well at times, and then going into the tank as they did vs Brown going from a 15 point lead to a 15 point deficit in just 10 minutes.

- Every Rider game I see (about 5-6 a year, live or in person), the team goes on a streak where they put points up in a hurry. We need to control that, cause when they do, the Crowd, even though small, will get into the game.

- The Key, like every game, is for us to defensd the 3, and let them beat us inside. We MUST stay in front of Johnson at all time and bother him. We won't stop him, just control him.

- Offensively I don't know what to think. Each game we have a new star. I think Riders starting 5 is pretty good defensively, but I think we want them to go to their bench.

Our most notable deficiency is in the prevention of the three. This team is guard-oriented with the bulk of the scoring coming from the backcourt. Stop the three and win the game.

RM,

Agree that we have got burnt by 3-point shooting, but I think most of the 3's have come from our opponents PF's and SF's. Just a quick check of the stats show that:

- Loyola's forwards Allen and Bossmen hit 6-11
- Yales 6-7 Vitelli and 6-6 Minoff go 5-11
- Charleston's Drafst 6-7 was tops at 2-4
- American's Guard Stokes went wild 6-12, but thats when the game was over the real problem was their center/PF Cresnik 3-9
- Marist's forwards Eppihimer and Sosler go 5-10

So I think our guards have done the job. But I am a little worried that Todd is not full speed from the ankle. Rider goes with 3 guards so out SF's Delfico and Max have to be on top of that. The good news is that Rider's Center and PF have only attempted 3 three pointers, all by Reed..... and he has hit 2 of them. Robert Reed is sneaky Good, and I would not be surpised to see him thowing up some 3's today.

IMO, our specific problem on our 3-point "D" is our PF/C getting out on "D". We are fine when Max or Nick are at the PF, but when Garcia, Gai, Feleccia or Ajou is at the 4, I worry about three point defense. Don't think that Rider's PF wil score from deep but they could bring in 4 shooters off the bench.

IMO, a shooter at the 4 is a dangerous weapon for Mid majors..... I think its been a blueprint to success for many Midmajors like Gonzaga, Richmond etc. I like Eppehimer from Marist for that reason. I think that Ajou can be that type for us. I am also hopeful that Marty O'Sullivan can be that type of player..... a taller version of Pat Yerina with a good 3-point shot

Pound the ball inside. Rider has no answers for Garcia, Thomson, Gai and Maxwell. We should get easy baskets and lots of foul shots.

Pound the ball inside.
