Subject: Sunday Thoughts - Rider Game

Another great defensive game by the entire team, and Gai carried us offensively as we could not buy a bucket in the first half. The combo of Gai rejecting some early shots, and the constant defensive pressure by Goode, Todd and Kudjo, kept the quick Rider guards off balance. Offensively, Todd, Max, and Delfico could not buy a basket in the first 10 minutes, but Gai hit a couple of key 3's and that opened up the offense for the Stags. Some Miscellaneous thoughts:

- Gai pulled down some really good strong rebounds in traffic. His rebounding is much improved over last year. Gai was a highlight film unto himself, with alley-oops, reverses, and blocks. He was playing 1.5 feet above the rim and above any one else.

- Maxwell missed some early outside jumpers, but then started to play more inside, and made some nice moves for hoops or fouls. There is no doubt that Max needs to start the game inside, get in his flow and confidence, and then roam to the outside to drain threes.

- Todd miss some early jumpers, and then forced some shots in a 2 minute period. TOT took him out and then Todd returned to play some good PG. Todd hit a big 5-footer on drive from baseline in thast 3 minutes, when the Stags were milking the clock, but still needed someone to make a play and a bucket with 5 sec to go on the shot clock. Todd also grabbed a big rebound in traffic with the Big Boys in the final minutes.... I thought it was max or Gai with the rebound, but Todd can rebound, check his stats. I don't care if we play close games, I am very comfortable with Todd in these tight situations.

- Kudjo played a really good floor game, and he played the most minutes for a guard, 32. He was very solid defensively, and was a big part of our team defense. He past up some open shots, but he took the ones he could make. I look at it this way..... he played a very good game as a role player..... obviously we need more than a role player at a postion like 2G. But you got to give Kudjo credit, he is playing within his capabilities. With more experience, and improvement Kudjo will be a good player. Some players need more time, Kudjo has been shoved into the starting role ever since he was a Frosh.... and in his particular case it probably has not been beneficial...yet

- Garcia had a rough game, especially in the 1st half, but he showed a nice 15 foot jumper on a couple of shots. I heard that he and Thomson were under the weather.

- Ajou looked better again. A little more mobile, but also a big improvement in his hands, his handle, and he had some good rebounds in traffic.

- Goode struggle a bit in the half court set, but he still was very effective defensively on Jerry Johnson. Todd covered Johnson when Goode was out, and Todd showed realy good "D" also. Not as noticible as Goode's, but Todd plays hard on "D".

- Thomson only played 5 minutes, some due to fouls, but I also heard he was sick. He made one nice bucket form 18 feet.... yes 18 feet, and he can hit that shot and should tak it more often when open. He just missed on a nice tip attempt, and even on the shot he missed he made a good move. I wrote a lot for someone who only played 5 minutes.

- Feleccia grabbed 2 good rebounds, and looked good.

- Carter played acouple of minutes, first time in 2-3 games.

Forgot about Delfico. Kind of a silent game for him (maybe thats why I forgot about him), but good hustle as usual from Nick. In the last two minutes he was credited with a turnover on an entry bounce pass to Gai. Yes, it was not a good pass, but it was one of those cases where Nick got the ball with 5 sec to go on the shot clock, and he either had to force a 3 or do something else. Bottom line, Todd or Max are better with the shot clock running down, and I think Max passed it to Nick with 5 secs to go..... giving it to the senior. IMO, Max needs to be more selfish in that case and make a play. Delfico probably hit the biggest shot of the game with a driving hoop late in the game..... again with the shot clock running down. Delfico was at SF, and I noticed that Rider's SF Laurence Young was held to 0-2 shooting, and NO Points and 1 rebound in 25 minutes of action. Norally he averages 12ppg. Nick and Max must have done the job on him...... one of those silent good jobs that nobody notices.

One of the things noticed is how approximately 200 Stags fans sitting in back of the bench, ( comprised of 6th man members, friends, fans, and relatives of the program ) shut down the 1200 Rider fans . Stag fans were loud and the Rider fans were silent.
It was like a home game for Fairfield and you could feel the synergistic energy between the team and fans. remineded me of Alumni Hall way back when.
