Subject: How good is this team? Is our start skewed by who we played are or we good?

I just finished listening to an interesting conversation between two fellow alumni. One claims we will end up just over 500 in the Maac and that our 4-0 start is really an anolomy as 3 of our 4 wins came against what will prove to be the bottom 3 teams in the maac (Loyola, Rider and Marist). The other Alumni claims we will only loose one MAAC game all year (away to Manhatten). He thinks Siena is overrated. I tend to be more middle of the road, but an optimistic who believes we will win all but 3-4 games. Is this start skewed by who we played or do we have a good team this year?

Wins over Loyola and Rider, I guess, should have been expected but we played very well against Marist (mid-tier MAAC) on the road and we beat Iona (top-tier MAAC) so I think we have proven that, when we play well, we can beat any team in our conference.

Knowing our history, I do not want to take any game for granted but our toughest remaining games probably are:

@ Siena - home court advantage for the Saints
@ Niagara - we seem to always let them win
@ Iona - Mulcahy always gives us fits
@ Manhattan - I can't remember the last time we won there.
HOME vs Manhattan - let's hope we can get some students and atmosphere in the Arena

4-0 in the MAAC, regardless of what teams we beat, is a much better start to the season than anyone under 40 can ever remember. Let's hope the momentum carries us through the season. Even this week's matchup with Canisius gives me the willies...

Today, 2 weeks from now, and at the end of the season. If the team wins both road games this week, no easy task, will the faithful start thinking that maybe they ARE pretty good. 3-1 on this road trip and they will be the 1st seed. Stop thinking about the past, and enjoy the present. This team is pretty good, and getting better.

After so many years of being beaten into submission, I still half expect a collapse. But this team has won games that it would not have in years past and it has talent. I don't think the Stags are better than Manhattan yet, but I think Fairfield can beat anyone else.

Right now I'd be happy with a 12-6 league record and a top 4 MAAC finish. But if we take 3 or 4 games on this road trip and prove we can win in New Rochelle and/or Albany, I may have to revise those goals.

Yes, the Stags are pretty good, and getting better. I still don't know exactly how good that is, but I think all long-suffering FU fans agree on one thing: This team has a chance to be special.

When's the last time we could say that?

Jeff,

I believe we will have the answer to your question on January 24th. If we sweep the next 4 games we are the team to beat and could run the table. 3-1 and we will be a top 4 seed. 2-2 we're in the top half. 1-3 or 0-4 same old stags. Stags must beat Cansius and take at least 1 of the games against Iona, Manhatten or Siena. In my mind they should be able to win 2 of those three and could win all 4. If we do win all four, you will start to see folks in the arena.

PS Jeff - will you make the trip up for the Manhatten game is we enter it 7-0 in Maac play?

Manhattan still has to be the favorite, but I think we are on equal footing with Iona, Siena, and Niagara at this time. But the key thing is that I feel we can beat any one of those teams, including Manhattan. Unfortunately, every game we play is going to be a dogfight, and probably a nail biter.... even against teams like Canisius, St Peters, Marist and Rider. Our Defense will keep us in every game, but we don't have the Offensive firepower like some of the other teams. I feel very confident that we can win any close game.

This team is a much different team than any other TOT team, so to try to make evaluations from what we have done in the past, I think is irrelevant. Not only different players, different style, better defense, and more composure. This team has its own identity.

1985-86. At this point in the season, the Stags first NCAA team was 9-4. That team ultimately won 24 games (15 by less than 10 points). The prior season the team had been 11-17.

Ever notice that when we expect less from the Stags, like this year where most of us considered them to be middle of the pack, they do better? No one expected that 85-86 team to win 24 games. Conversely, there have been several years where the expectations were high and the results were poor. No wonder we are so edgy and uncertain. We can never be confident that we know what is going to happen.

Not only will I drive up, I'll buy you dinner. I don't expect to have to make the drive though. We'll find a way to loose one of the next three
