Canisius has always been a tough team in the MAAC tournament. but never has a good record during the season. Maybe its because we have done well against them. I expect that our height and depth to be a big difference. Anybody know how Todd's ankle is, that could be a big difference.

Don't be deceived by Canisius's record. They were 5-2 at the beginning of the year. Yes, they have lost 6 in a row, but 5 of those 6 were on the road. They lost to teams like St Bonnies, Notre Dame, Syracuse and St Joes. They are only 1-3 in the MAAC, but all 4 games were on the road playing Iona, Siena, Niagara, and Marist...... all 4 are tough places to win. they did win at Niagara by 20.

They have not played at home in 4 weeks. Vegas odds have Griffs favored by 2. IMO, this game will be as tough as the Iona or Siena game.

No respect as the Sports Network has us at the losing end tonight....

FACTS & STATS: Site: Koessler Center (2,100) -- Buffalo, New York.
Television: None. Home Record: Fairfield 5-2, Canisius 3-2. Away Record:
Fairfield 3-3, Canisius 2-6. Neutral Record: Fairfield 0-0, Canisius 0-0.
Conference Record: Fairfield 4-0, Canisius 1-3. Series Record: Series is tied,
26-26.

GAME NOTES: The Fairfield Stags try to stay perfect in Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference play tonight, as they travel to Buffalo to battle the Canisius
Golden Griffins at the Koessler Center. The Stags recorded their third win in
a row and their fourth in the MAAC, with a 66-59 victory over Rider on
Saturday. Despite its successful run through the early part of the league
slate, Fairfield is just 3-3 on the road this season. Meanwhile, the Golden
Griffins are coming off their sixth consecutive loss, as they were beaten
83-78 by Marist on Friday night. The loss dropped the Griffs to just 1-3 in
the MAAC this season and to 2-6 on the road. The Stags tied the all-time
series between these two teams last year, as they swept the Griffins.
Fairfield pulled out a 77-69 win in Buffalo and won easily in Connecticut,
72-54, as it has now won five games in a row in the series.

Deng Gai had a stellar performance in the win over Rider, as he led Fairfield
with 24 points and eight rebounds. Gai shot 8-of-13 from the floor and was a
monster on defense with four blocked shots. DeWitt Maxwell was the only other
Stag in double figures, chipping 10 points and six rebounds. Maxwell shot just
3-of-9 from the field, but was effective dishing the ball with a team-high
five assists. Gai is now averaging 14.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg, while shooting 57.1
percent from the floor. While Gai is a solid low-post presence for Fairfield,
he's not afraid to step out and shoot from long range, where he's made 8-of-17
three-pointers. Oscar Garcia has just six points against Rider, but is still
turning in 12.6 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Garcia has been up and down this season, as
his 37 turnovers to only six assists has been detrimental to the team.

Hodari Mallory is one of the most electric players in the MAAC, scoring 17.5
ppg and pulling in 6.3 rpg. Mallory is also shooting 46.7 percent from three-
point range and leads the team with 25 steals. Brian Dux is the only other
Griffin player in double-digit scoring with 15.2 ppg. Dux is the team's
leading passer this year with 84 assists, while shooting an impressive 93.2
percent from the charity stripe. He shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the foul line,
while scoring 15 points and dishing out nine assists in the loss to Marist.
Kevin Downey paced the team in defeat with a team-high 20 points on 6-of-7
shooting from beyond the arc. Mallory chipped in 19 points and five rebounds
in the losing effort, while Yaku Moton-Spruill had 10 points and five boards.
Canisius lost the game despite shooting 50.9 percent from the field and 47.4
percent from beyond the arc.

Fairfield has been red hot of late playing against the Griffins, but look for
that to change tonight. Canisius has not looked overpowering in its recent
games, but Mallory and Dux are playing solid ball. Their efforts have allowed
the Griffs to shoot much better from the field in their recent losses and it
will payoff with an upset victory tonight.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Canisius 70, Fairfield 67

Canisius will have a very difficult time dealing with FF's size. Pressure and contain Dux and Mallory, (who is hurt, knee strain), pound it into Oscar, Ajou and DG, convert your free throws, and get the hell out of Buffalo with the W.

I think we have a huge advantage against guard-driven teams. If Goode, Todd and Sogadzi can contain Mallory and Dux, keep them to their season's average or hopefully below, then Canisius will struggle to score. If we can control the two stars, Canisius will need career games from some lesser players to take us down. Possible, but not likely.

I agree, we need to pound it inside and let our big guys make baskets or go to the foul line. I'd like to see the Stags get 30+ foul shots and convert 80%.

I understand all the intangibles—first MAAC home game, players returning from injuries, law of averages—favor the Griffs tonight. But if we follow this game plan, I think we win.

I think we are all in agreement. Contain their guards and pound the ball down in the post. Our big guys should have a big game tonight. Would like to see Garcia rebound from the Rider game. As OMM said, get the hell out of Buffalo with the win!

While I agree with the offensive strategy of feeding the ball inside and drawing fouls, I think our #1 Priority is to defend their scorers. Obviously Todd and Goode will be on Dux, and since Mallory will play mostly as a 6-3 SF, it will be up to Delfico and Maxwell to contain him. If Mallory deems to be too quick for them, I think we should consider going to a 3-guard line-up with Kudjo at the 3. This is a game we could use Michael Bell. Defensive matchups should be are #1 priority.

I always get worried when we think we can overpower an opponent. Team Quickness wins.

I agree with the strategy. However, pounding the ball down low has not been a FF strong suit. The guards even struggle at times with the olley-oop. It will be a difficult game - the paint will be crowded.
