Re: mike van schaick - a question -- JoeStag, 08:04:03 03/05/03 Wed
rdjc (or anyone else who can answer)
Mike Van Schaick has been described as a very good outside shooter and FT shooter. I also see him getting to the line quite a bit. He also has been described as a good, agressive defensive player. I also see that he is about 6-2 and on the thin side. All these charactertics can also be said of David Bennett of Marist. I find it helpful when people describe a HS player in terms of a known MAAC Player.
Can you compare MVS to David Bennett and tell me how MVS compares as far as a shooter, getting to the line, defense.....and where do you think MVS talent level compares with David Bennett.

He's better than Bennet. -- soup, 22:42:01 03/05/03 Wed
MVS is just a flat out scorer. More athletic than Bennet, but not overly athletic. He won't hit six 3s, but he'll hit 2 or 3. Very savvy on the court. Plays harder on defense than he does on offense. He's not the shooter Knapp was - but he's just as good a playmaker and manages to get his own shot. I don't think he's ever going to be a First Team All-MAAC player - but I guarantee he has a very solid career and gets to 1,000 points. If you had to knock him - it's his lack of strength. As we all know, it's difficult for a 2G to step into this league and defend against "men". He's going to struggle against Flores (who doesn't?), Mitchell of Siena, Robert Taylor of Rider etc. - those guys are too strong and athletic for him.
I have nothing but good things to say about him. I've seen him play a handful of times. I expect him to play solid minutes and get his 8ppg next year. Should be one of the 10 best freshman next year and could see him on the All-Rookie team. You guys got yourself a very solid hooper - and a good kid.

He's the type of player that we need -- JoeStag, 08:25:08 03/06/03 Thu
Most MAAC Recruits have some type of weakness thats why they are not recruited by a Duke of UCONN..... or going to be a Lottery pick. But I think that MVS has the type of skills that the Stags are missing..... someone who can consistently stick the open jumper.
Glad to hear that you think that he would be better than Bennett.... as I think if the Stags had Bennett on their Roster this year, he would have solved some Fairfield outside shooting problems.
While I have not seen MVS play yet, I bet his style of play will be similar to Bennett.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED -- new comer...., 16:46:13 03/06/03 Thu
Hey everyone...Every game mike has played in, that I have seen, he has done nothing but improve himself. Knock him becuase of his size (which I am sure will change when he gets to a new, more experienced, more dedicated program as I am sure you have seen most of your players do, bulk up since their freshman year)but after he gets to Fairfield, starts to establish himself on your team; you will see that all your worries about his miniscule weaknesses will be gone. Should you really be worrying about comparing him to other people or should you just be worrying about getting you tickets to see him play?

mike van schaick - link to recap -- JoeStag, 08:25:58 03/05/03 Wed
Looks like MVS was forced to get get his other teammates involved as the scorers.... only 18 points in the finals but 5 assists and 6 steals. IMO, a shooting guard has to be much more than just a shooter/scorer..... they need to setup and create for the rest of the team..... almost be the "alternate PG".

Re: mike van schaick -- hoops, 09:08:16 03/05/03 Wed
After watching the tourney play mike is all around a great player already with some room to improve if that is possible. Compare him to who you want to compare him with this kid has it all...in a league of his own. His 18 points against Berkshire were probably the best 18 this kid has had. Does he ever crumble under pressure...I don't think so!
