I guess I still like the other format for a couple of reasons.

-Its too big an advantage. #1 already gets to play lower seeded teams. Don't you think MC would have been able to win in the old format? Good chance. Would you think the current format is good if tiebreakers decide the #1 seed (common MAAC occurrence). If you aren't good enough to survive the previous format you aren't that much better than everyone else. If you really want #1 to move forward, bag the tourney.

-Fans don't get to see the #1 seed as much or as easily. Many fans would either have to (1) live close to the site, or (2) take a vacation day or (3) drive home in the middle of the night to see #1 as well as the other semi-final.

I don't think Siena (last year) as a 7 did much, if any, worse in the NCAA than any of the higher seeds would have done.

How about this as a concept - Fewer (and therefore narrower) divisions between teams is fairer because you never know where the natural divisions will arise.

I liked the old format better. I personally thought it was great that the seventh seed could advance to the NCAA Tournament. Thats what makes the tournament great. The season was behind you and if you could find a way to win 4 games you could go to the NCAA. It was in effect a format where every team in the country had a chance to make the NCAA, it was like an extension of the tournament, an NCAA tournament that featured every team.

Frankly, I don't think the new format had too much to do with the fact the Fairfield and Manhatten were in the finals. The better teams advanced this year and this year there was a real difference between the top and middle tier teams in the league. In other years that was not the case, and when we have a more balanced league again in the future we will again see more upsets.

Siena had home court advantage and a strong team last year, despite finishing 7th. That's why they advanced. In 1996 Fairfield had a great team plagued by an injury to a superstar Shannon Bowman. When he was well they were able to put it together and win. Same for the stags of 1987. Gromos returned from his broken wrist and the team was again unstoppable. I'm sure the new format is hear to stay but expect the upsets in the Maac tournament to continue in future years in spite of the format change.
